Best Online File Sharing Service?
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on May 7, 2008
Once upon a time, if you wanted to access or share a file over the internet, you either had to have your own web server to upload it to or hope the file was small enough to sneak in under your email account's upload limits. Nowadays, you can upload and share gigabytes worth of data for free using a handful of web applications designed to make sharing and storing files online a breeze. We've covered gobs of them, but among all the choices, it's difficult to narrow down the competition to find the best. That's why you're here. For this week's Hive Five, we want to hear about your favourite. Hit the jump for details and to nominate your favourite online file storage and sharing application.
The first round of the Hive Five voting takes place in the comments, where you nominate your favourite tool for the job. We get hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: Online Storage App Goes Here. If you don't follow this format, your vote may not be counted. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.
About the Hive Five: Our new feature series, the Hive Five, asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get—"Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favourite tools to get a job done. Every Thursday, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's Best Text Editors Hive Five.

I'm a virtual assistant and this has been a complete lifesaver for me in my business. I have a different shared library for each client and I can set permissions, etc. and even access my files remotely. It has eliminated the problem of multiple versions of the same document on different computers.
I also use Drop.io for a quick and easy way to share files, especially if it's only temporary.
I've tried other online storage apps, but these are my favorites and they work the best for what I need them for.

Yow.
I've been going to some of these websites and reading the terms-of-service. Do people actually read these? There's at least one site where, if you agree to the terms, you also give them permission to access your computer. Given the wording, you're probably giving them access to your entire computer. (However, in all fairness, I don't think they'll do that, even though you're giving them the full rights to do so.)

Now, SkyDrive might be good (I don't know -- I've never used, but I suppose I should check it out). However, don't assume that it'll always be around, just because it's attached to some big name.

Honestly till now I have found that all web based file sharers are immensly difficult to use. And those that are easy enough to use, have some other problem somewhere!
Rapidshare is very common however, if the file is larger than 100mb it could take eons to download all the files.
Frankly this is the only one I have used extinsively.
Others like sendspace, and megaupload have hugely annoying captchas. I understand that all of them need security precautions, etc. But unless you are downloading one file I've found its really annoying. I haven't even looked into upload yet!!

full disclosure, i am voting for a service i helped found and actively work on (in fact, i am in the office now)
We are:
very lightweight (no sign up, no names, no accounts, create as many private spaces as you want - each in literally 2 clicks)
ridiculously 'input' and 'output' rich (web, widgets, email, mms, voice messaging, fax, etc... all instantly available) - just you wait on this one btw
and highly versatile (simple to protect 'drops' with passwords and set expiration parameters - converting docs, audio, video, pics on the fly, etc...)
and, while the 'la' extension is cool, i mean come on - what beats the Indian Ocean :)

You only get a few GB of additional storage, but you can claim as much space online as you have physically; so if you share 100GB of your hard drive, that space is available to you anywhere in the cloud. It mounts as a physical drive, you have permission control over the files and folders, you can share and broadcast. It's the best thing since sliced ginger.

MEDIAFIRE for files under 100mb for sure. It scans all files with Kasperspy AV, no CAPTCHA. 8/10 for download speeds. Unobtrusive advertising.
I also nominate RAPIDSHARE for the WORST COMPANY OF THE YEAR over @ Consumerist. The CAT/DOG CAPTCHA is mind-numbing. Every time they put in a new obstacle, it furthers my resistance to ever purchasing an account. Make me sit through an ad for 20 seconds, instead of try to squint @ the captcha for ten minutes.
DIVSHARE is nice for sending MP3's to friends, because of the Flash MP3 player the is embeddable.

my webserver may not have candy colored rounded fonts with cute misspellings for a name, but nothing is simpler than:
ftp file to server

There's a lot of so-called cutting-edge "web 2.0" stuff that is really just basic server usage with a pretty floral bonnet to give everyone a fuzzy feeling.

I know, I know, it's $100 and sort of Mac-only, but hear me out: You get a locally sync'd copy automatically. It's a lot of storage now (10 gigs). It serves up web pages, has email, and even lets you attach a custom domain. Plus it has anonymous upload (if you enable it), which damn near nothing else has!
Box.net is the runner up because it's free and is a simple WebDav storage hole. Nothing wrong with simple.

Right now I only use file sharing to post videos I'm in the process of editing prior to their release so other members of my team can watch & comment on them. They can stream them directly from DivShare or download the original file and the 5GB limit is plenty since this is only temporary storage til the videos get posted to our web site.
It'll be interesting to see how this survey this turns out - lots of choices.

For it's complete simplicity, no need to sign up, and live upload / download which means that, because broadband lines are by and large asynchronous (it's the A in ADSL) and upstream is slower than downstream, you can stream 1GB files between computers.

The question is too vague: best in what regard?
Best for quickly getting a single moderately large file to your buddy:
VOTE: drop.io (it's not best but least worst :-)
Best for uploading/downloading many much larger files, maybe on a many to many basis? No idea. (But rapidshare is sure as hell disqualified for unleashing the cat and dog captchas on the world.)
Also, it is important to distinguish best in the sense "most space" and best in the sense "highest download/upload speed". Speed is what almost all of the available sites sorely lack, space is what they all have and try to market themselves with. It's the one click file host's equivalent of the megapixel race for digicams.

BTW, I dream of a site like this:
1. very fast up/download speed, gigantic space not needed. 200Mb would be fine.
2. password protected share
3. auto expire rules for shares
4. can be conveniently accessed from a number of different IM clients, like this (or something similar):
- user A drops a file in his IM buddy list and on user B's name. If B is online, the file is sent directly. If B is offline, the file is uploaded to A's filehost and a message about the available file is IM'ed for B to see when he logs on, including a direct link to the file (with the access password as a URL parameter)
4 would be the really novel thing here. If someone implemented it in a clean and open way I'm sure that it would catch on like wildfire.
Come to think of it, it would be even better with some standard for integrating online file hosts and IMs. Ideally users could then choose from both a number of file host and a number of IM systems.

I don't think there is any one "best" tool. Some tools work for some users but not others.
For instance, the tool my company makes (www.wonderfile.net) is designed for business users who want to collaborate in a secure ad-free environment.
Wonderfile appeals to a specific audience, rather than trying to please everyone. I think that makes for a better tool.

They have not officially launched yet but these guys have some cool stuff. Firstly their back-end is Amazon S3 so the storage is secure. Currently you subscribe to their service but they tell me they are soon going to open it up so you can enter your own Amazon S3 keys and pay a $1 a month for their services.
You can do all the usual stuff like upload your files, tag etc. They have a nice File Browser. They also allow file sharing via email in which you can set a deadline for the link to the file to expire which is nice. The killer feature for me is the group sharing functionality in which you can create a group, add users to the group and then share a file with the group or individual users - I use this a lot as a mechanism to keep partners up to date with collateral for my business.
They released an API a while back so you can access all these features via their REST API, and I'm currently testing the beta of a Firefox plug-in that uses this API.
