Prevent GNOME Do from Popping Up at Logon
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:35 PM on May 6, 2008
The Digi.Wander.Lust blog posts a handy tip for users of Linux application launcher GNOME Do who find its default pop-up at logon a bit annoying. If you're rocking an Ubuntu system, head to the "Sessions" item in your "Preferences" menu, select GNOME Do and hit edit, then add —quiet (use two dashes, as shown in the pic) to the "Command" field (or edit whatever auto-launcher brings up GNOME Do in other distributions). It's a nice way to save a click and ensure a clean logon screen.

Hi,
I think the link at the end of the post needs to be fixed. The protocol prefix appears twice causing the link not to be displayed correctly.

"Preferences" menu, select GNOME Do and hit edit, then add -quiet to the "Command" field.
There is a problem here. I think it is because of the auto correct feature. Basically it should be a double dash (like the image) and not one long dash so it should be:
-- quiet

@mskadu: @abhiroop: Valid points, both of them. Link is fixed, and as for the "double-dash" problem, it's being addressed. Sorry for any confusion!

I tried GNOME-Do when I upgraded to Hardy. The interface is slick, but I found it to be buggy when launching from my command keys (ie - I'd sometimes have to wait 30 seconds for it to pop up after giving the launch command). I'll take the (relatively) ugly interface and rock solid reliability of Deskbar over GNOME-do in its current state, thank you very much.

@Forge42: Lemme just ask: Were you using the Amarok plugin with GNOME Do? I definitely had 20+ second waits when using that monster. Otherwise, I get nearly-instant pop-ups.

@Kevin Purdy:
DO NOT use the amarok plugin, its highly unstable and it freezes up gnome do

Now that I think about it, yes, I was using the Amarok plugin. I might give it a go w/ that removed. Thanks guys.

@abhiroop
I wonder if that's why Gnome Do habitually gobbled up all of my available RAM until I stopped trying to use it.
