Wanokoto Webapp Turns Photos Old-Timey

The Red Ferret Journal points out a slick, Japanese upload-and-convert tool for giving photos that browned-out, decades-old look. Select a photo or paste in a URL (both words are written in English, as luck would have it), and hit the bottom blue button. The photo results aren't returned at full resolution, but, depending on lighting, quality, and, of course, modernity of subject, you can get pretty authentic-looking results without any image editor filters or plug-ins. The site is free to use, and (it appears) doesn't restrict upload file sizes.

Sweet, this works a charm on Second Life photos, imbuing "character" to the digital sources:

Fun! I tend to like packages of tools like this (e.g., Picnik) rather than one-thing-ponies, but this looks fun and I'm gonna try it out. :)

@CoffeeLove: It seems as though this site is using a Photoshop action.
If you look at all the pictures in any corner, you'll notice the same grainy edge is applied to each image. It's like making a layer in Photoshop and pasting some grimy texture and then setting the opacity along with an overlay.

Amazing :D!
It does leave the image a little pixel-like. But it's perfect for a quick-pick.
It's not that hard to accomplish in photoshop, a little saturation, desaturation, textures, and softlight! yippe.

The "old" pictures are not always good but it's a nice tool anyway.

I prefer filters in PSP11 to doing this, HOWEVER, this is pretty useful for people who don't want to/can't afford Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop - or you can use GIMP (it's got a horrible UI though) - really neat tool - I might compare this to some apps when I get home tonight and post them here or on flickr or something.

OH, additional tip: if you use Photoshop or don't, Filter Forge is available as both a plugin and in standalone mode, and there are some *fine* grungy old-skool filters (user-created) for it. 30-day trial and has several different editions. For example, see:

I'm not officially affiliated, just very happy with its versatility.

Too bad it doesn't output back in the original resolution. But it's hilarious when using it with screen shots from computer games, or in this case, from Google Earth.
