Digsby Integrates Facebook Chat
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:30 AM on May 2, 2008
The popular up-and-coming chat application Digsby (original post) has integrated the newly released Facebook Chat. Digsby separated itself from the pack of the five best instant messengers with its extensive integration with email and social web sites, so the Facebook Chat integration should be a welcome addition for Digsby fans.

The Digsby developers should be awarded the Nobel Awesomeness Prize.

didn't take them long, and works flawlessly. Digsby gets an 11 now :)

All that's stopping this being a perfect implementation at the moment's the option to organise your Facebook contacts into groups- and that's on the horizon, according to the Digsby changelog.
Fantastically fast rollout there- the Digsby team are doing a sterling job of fixing up the program at a decent rate. I'm quite impressed. =\

Digsby gets my vote simply for being the best third party client that emulates AIM features perfectly. And it just keeps getting better.

YES! I love this program. I predict it gives Pidgen a run for its money in market share sometime in the not-so-distant future.

@AirRaven: Yep, I submitted that as a bug report earlier, and they responded really quickly with this:
"We will add this feature in the next update. We got really excited that we finished it and pushed without it :)
You can, however, merge them with other buddies so if a facebook buddy has an AIM account you can drag one onto the other and move the merged contact into another group."

I hope it gets added to Meebo soon, too.

I'm worried about Digsby... the whole pushing updates without a way to opt out doesn't sit right with me. I talked a computer-illiterate friend into switching to Digsby, but after a week or two of using it, it auto-updated and left her with a broken installation of it. Frustrated and not knowing what to do, she switched back to the god-awful AIM client.

its cool but super annoying cuz it tells you whenever someone signs on and off of facebook

I still like Meebo more, and I hope that they add this. But I should seriously sheck out Digsby; it looks really nice. (or maybe Lifehacker's just tricking me)

O@superbryant88: You can turn the "Buddy comes online" notification off. That's what I did because you're right, it does get a little ridiculous with the Facebook friends.

We just need to lower the memory footprint and we'll be good.

Does anyone know how Digsby is doing this? As far as I know, Facebook hasn't released an API for chat. If Digsby is screen scraping, is the scraping being done locally or on their servers?
I'm a little concerned about privacy and security with Digsby. This ISN'T an open-source app, and eventually they will find a way to monetize their product.
By so far, I'm loving Digsby!

I haven't used an im client in months, but I was intrigued by this feature and downloaded Digsby.
All I can say is...wow. Things have really progressed. Now not only multiple im platforms, but also gtalk and social networking hookups. Customization options are bountiful, and the layout is sleek.
Only negative - Digsby eats up A LOT of memory. It hovers up around 100-130 mb for me. Is this normal for an im client nowadays?

Yes, aside from the memory footprint, this thing kicks Trillian to the curb. Sorry T.
