Unlock USB Support for VirtualBox in Ubuntu Hardy Heron
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on May 1, 2008
VirtualBox makes virtual installations of Windows and other operating systems easier than you'd think in Linux (as mentioned in our second look at Ubuntu 8.04, "Hardy Heron"), but the key missing feature from its free, open-source edition is USB support. Your iPod need not feel shunned from Linux land any longer, however, as the Ubuntu Unleashed blog offers step-by-step instructions on installing and configuring VirtualBox with support for plug-in devices. It's specific to the newest Ubuntu and a little bit more than the "five easy steps" promised, but it should only take a few minutes to unlock the bridge between your system-in-a-system and all your gadgets.

Sorry for the all-link text earlier, due to a misplaced quote mark. Should be fixed now.

Okay I have a question, I remember an article on lifehacker that told you ho to access your windows partition through linux on your dual-boot system. sorta like a remote desktop i believe. Anybody remember this, if so did you save the link to it?
thanks

The changelog says USB 2.0 ([www.virtualbox.org]) . But I wonder if my Logitech Quickcam finally works or not (damn, just tested a few days ago with the old version and then removed everything in anger).

Does this do USB 2.0 support? Or is it just 1.0?

@superbryant88: I believe the Lifehacker article you want is here: [lifehacker.com]
I'd suggest following the first commenter's link to the [www.venturecake.com] tutorial rather than the article's link to the oopsilon one.

Hardy Heron goes on tonight; this is a good reason to install it now. The lack of USB support on the earlier VirtualBox is a problem.
Thanks for pointing this out.

Why do you need virtualbox and windows to access your ipod? There are several programs with ipod connectivity in linux
