Quickly Edit Gmail Contacts Through Your Chat List

The Official Gmail blog points out a small new feature update in Gmail that allows you to edit contact information on-the-fly directly from your chat list. In short, when you hover your mouse over a contact in chat (or an email), the name in the pop-up details window is now editable. Since the chat pane is really the quickest way to search and access your contacts, it's a great way to quickly add meaningful names to your contacts—especially since Gmail's contact management tools are still a little unwieldy. Small improvements like that could go a long way in boosting Gmail's status as a top 5 contact management tool.

Very useful indeed...I also didn't like having to go and edit it on the Contacts page...much easier

OOOH now thats nice! I never did care for the contact management screens much in gmail.

Any way to turn that off? I personally hate things like that popping up whenever my mouse happens to wander.

OK that's lame. When will Google simply give an address book that I can fully manage? I hate to see contacts automatically added. There is absolutely no point in this...good thing for them i'm not a freaking paranoid guy who believes they're trying to track my outgoing emails.

Oooh lookit! More crappy AJAX. Hooray.
Why don't the throw all these "features" in the bin, and just come up with an easy way to sync my Gmail address book with my Mail.app one?

Comment on Quickly Edit Gmail Contacts Through Your Chat List How can google NOT offer the ability to actually navigate to the FULL contact information for someone from the contact search window? This seems insane. They have the little popup window so I can email....and look at recent recent conversations...and a picture....can I just get to address/phone# info please ? (Unless my contacts aren't individually addressable because they are hid beneath too much ajax soup.)

Comment on Quickly FYI, that feature is not new, they just recently highlighted it. (I've been using it for several months now)

I have dual monitors and find it easiest to keep a version of gmail going one each screen, the one primarily dedicated to contacts for quick contact lookup. Hopefully, google will add more functionality soon...please
