Provider Extension Integrates Remember the Milk into Thunderbird
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:05 PM on May 1, 2008
Windows/Mac/Linux (Thunderbird): Harness the to-do-managing power of Remember the Milk from inside your mail reader with an alpha extension for Thunderbird. Once installed and authenticated with your RTM account, the task manager provided by the Lightning extension will have bi-directional access to your tasks, which you can add, delete, modify, and prioritise from inside your mail manager. Hit the video above to see a few of the things you can do with the extension, and hit the via link below for step-by-step installation instructions. Remember the Milk Provider extension is a free download, but requires a free Mozilla Add-Ons account to download, needs the Lightning calendar extension, and works wherever Thunderbird does.

Who was narrating that thing? Napoleon Dynamite? That was awful! The extension is cool though.

From the video it looks like you can assign categories to tasks in Lightning, but it still doesn't look like there's a way to view and filter task lists by category in the Thunderbird pane. That's always held me back from adopting it. Am I wrong?

@Sybarite, @jive01
It's the extension author (Micheal Wu) himself in the video.
ps: I added the comment once, but it didn't appear. If this is double post, pls pardon this poor ignorant soul.

@monster79 and @Andre Kibbe: In response to myself: while Lifehacker has still been fantastic today, this extension leaves a lot to be desired. It's not the extension's fault - some of the problem is Lightning's fairly rudimentary handling of tasks. Complaints:
- It lumps all the task categories into one ("None".) This stinks.
- Due dates don't appear to work correctly.
- Editing tasks? Forget about it, you should use full-blown RTM for this.
Overall, I vastly prefer using the RTM iGoogle gadget in Firefox's sidebar. (That gadget interface is what the real RTM should be, BTW.) The correct home for this is the Bird though, so I'm still waiting for the day that the integration doesn't suck...

I'm a fan of Quicksilver+RTM.. a few keystrokes and BAM, task added. Ditto for Quicksilver+GoogleCalendar, which has the added bonus of offering a nifty Growl notice that the meeting was set. Between the two, I'm nearly able to keep all my myriad tasks ... well.. on task.

@monster79: How are you loading gadgets in the sidebar?

@monster79: Ah crud, URLs got filtered. Let's try again:
RTM gadget: [www.rememberthemilk.com]
Sidebar tweak:
[mozillalinks.org]

@skyhopper88: Bookmark this page in Firefox:
then go to Organize Bookmarks and select the bookmark you created. If in FF3 beta, click the "More" button, and check "Load this bookmark in the sidebar." Then visit the bookmark, and presto, it shows up in the sidebar.
Most importantly, I moved my sidebar to the right (it always gets in the way on the left.) Instructions for that are here:

I'd like to see a setup whereby you could make a RTM task by starring an email - a la the gmail integration. Does anybody have a feel for how hard it would be to make this happen?

Great extension - can we work something out so that we see the to do items within Lightning as an actual scheduled appointment?
That would be ideal.

@fishlips20: RTM has instructions for viewing your tasks on your Sunbird/Lightning calendar using ical: [www.rememberthemilk.com]
@telepanda: You could forward the email to your RTM email address (which you can find the Settings page, on the Info tab). Messages show up in your RTM Inbox with the subject as the task name. Perhaps there's a Thunderbird extension that would allow you to quickly forward a message to a set address using a hotkey or a button.

@gyffes: Could you explain how to setup QS + RTM & QS + GCAL? Future LH post maybe, *hint*?

Is anyone else having trouble registering and downloading this extension? What's with having to register to download this anyway?
