Best Text Editor?
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on April 30, 2008
You don't have to be a programmer to appreciate the joys of plain text, and there's no better way to wrangle your text files than a solid text editor. Plain text files are appealing because they're searchable, lightweight, portable, and truly platform agnostic; plain text just makes life easier. With an abundance of excellent text editors available beyond your operating system's default, choosing the best program to manipulate and manage your plain text files isn't so easy. Luckily we've got you, our loyal readers. So for this week's Hive Five, we want to hear all about your favourite text editor. Hit the jump for details and to nominate your favourite.
The first round of the Hive Five voting takes place in the comments, where you nominate your favourite tool for the job. We get hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: Text Editor Goes Here. If you don't follow this format, your vote may not be counted. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.
About the Hive Five: Our new feature series, the Hive Five, asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get—"Which solution is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favourite tools to get a job done. A day later, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For example, check out last week's Best Contact Management Applications Hive Five.

Been using it for years... as well as tabs, and syntax highlighting, it also lets you group files into 'projects' which is handy when you want to open a bunch of related files at the same time.
It's "Find In Files" function is superb allowing you to use Regex, and allowing you to do 'replaces' across multiple files (use with Caution!).
I also like the 'column' select mode which is a handy way to copy and paste stuff out of the middle of a file.

I've tried pretty much most of them (listed above) - and they all have pluses and minuses and it's really hard to say which one wins (this will probably depend on what your priorities and requirements/needs are). TextPad is slick and fast but does not handle unicode well - this pretty much limit's for me. It's sort is faster than UltraPad's but again, if you have unicode in your data it's lost. UltraPad is a bit slower to open, but on the other hand handles unicode well. The same is with EmEditor, a bit slover to open but it actualy opens the files very fast. I am working with 400MB+ files so this is a very important feature. If you are a developer and looking for a nice code editor Coda is awesome, UltraEdit will do the job as well. NotePad++ is nice and promising, good luck working with large files though. Nice GUI though. So, to sum it up - it all depends (like this is something new)... Cheers, Amar

An expert in vim can accomplish his task far faster than an expert in any other text editor.
Close second would be Emacs with viper mode, but if you don't need the programmability of Emacs then it's weight and speed can slow you down.
A real embedded vim InputManager for Cocoa would rock so many worlds.

In my work environment (a headless cluster), I am usually ssh'd in and using Vim, although recently I've started dabbling with a workflow using ExpanDrive (ssh drive mounting) and TextMate, and I have to say I'm quite pleased with it. On the rare occasion I'm on a Windows computer without ssh, I keep a portable copy of Notepad++ on my USB key.

Get the portable version so you can try it out. Then open up Preferences and uncheck 'enable document switcher' and uncheck 'enable MRU behavior for document switcher.' Add the close button to each tab. This makes the program's tabs operate just like in Firefox, instead of weirdly jumping around. I tried PSPad and Vim, but once you change these settings Notepad++ wins hands down.

Comment on Best Text Editor? TextMate. I've used NotePad++ and BBEdit, and none compare to the elegance and extensibility of TextMate and it's bundles. If I'm stuck on Windows, e (which aims to be a TextMate for Windows, even using the same bundles) is OK. But TextMate rules the roost.

Vim/Emacs are obviously the best for power users, but gedit/notepad++ are good if you don't want to remember a bunch of commands.
nano is a useful command line editor if you don't know how to use vim/emacs.
metapad is a good notepad replacement if you don't want something as big as notepad++ but want more features than the regular Windows notepad. ([www.liquidninja.com])

DOS Navigator's editor, hands down. I've been using it for well over a decade, and haven't come across anything that's made me want to switch. (Being part of the best file manager ever made probably has something to do with that.) Line/block mode, clipboard appending with full Windows integration, file/cursor/highlight/directory/clipboard histories, macros, syntax/bracket/loop highlighting, all in a 160x80 window.
Well, you get the picture. About the only other text editor I ever use is SciTE, when I'm doing AutoIT programming and need all the extra utilities.

Wily is the Windows/Mac/Unix port of Acme, The Programmer's Interface. Acme, originally written for Plan 9, treats all text exactly the same: you can select it with the left button, execute it with the middle button, or "goto" it with the right button. Goto will interpret what you've selected as a line number, if it's in the form ":14"; a filename, if such a file exists; a specific line in a file, for the form "foo.txt:14"; or, if all else fails, a search string. The selection can be used to provide arguments or standard input to executed text, and you can even pipe the selection into a command and then have the results replace the selection. It's just that cool.

I'm really surprised by the lack of emacs support. It seems pretty evenly divided between emacs and vi at my work. I never got the hang of either, and nano has a feature I really like, when I start typing, it starts editing :). If it was more important to me, I'd have to learn vi. It's really the best geek tool because it's on every Linux machine. Period.

Although notepad is not the most powerful nor anywhere near aesthetic, it's simplicity and ability to be used on any windows machine is what grants its power.

I have to vote Metapad, that's what I'm using right now.
Have to say though, this "Hive Five" is a little too broad. The "best text editor" is largely dependent on what you want it for.
E.g. I don't know what people love about Vim or Emacs, but I've managed to live without it. All I need is a simple text editor that has some basic text handling features - converting case, stripping whitespace, undoing word wrap. I'm not interested in spending a month learning to do these things.
You need a separate Hive Five for those who live by the command line, and one for the rest of us who are still forced due to our lower intelligence to use a mouse every now and then.
Also, do you do coding? Then your best text editor will be something else as well. And what kind of coding etc., and what OS are you on?
I'm just afraid this Hive Five won't produce anything useful for me.

Again I am in a ranting mood. Notepad++ is voted so many times here. Its a good option, no doubt about it. But try some advanced features and you see glaring bugs.
1. Try Block select(Alt+select) on variable length line...Notepad++ can't handle this basic thing.
2. Try RegEx Search/Replace, Notepad++ fails again.

Metapad is nice, light, and VERY portable, but no spell check or all that extra helpful environment stuff for C, Basic, HTML, Perl, etc.
gVIM has all the goodies, but spell check is tricky, and you have to learn VI to get the most out of it.
Otherwise, Notepad++, although the web site has VERY ANNOYING graphics of lizard with a long tongue, that AdBlock seems impotent against.
