Use Keywurl to Jump to "I'm Feeling Lucky" Sites Instantly
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:15 PM on April 25, 2008

Reader Brett writes in with his favourite Safari tip, harnessing the power of Google and keyword search tool Keywurl into one nifty time-saver. He sets his default Keywurl search to a URL that pulls up Google's first "I'm feeling lucky" result, using this string:
http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=That way, whenever he wants to head to a reasonably well-known site, he simply types it into his address bar and Google ferries him to the site instantly. Have any of your own insta-search tricks for Keywurl or Firefox? Let's hear 'em in the comments. (Original Keywurl post).

This feature used to be the default behaviour in Firefox. Now I'm running FF 3 Beta 5, and typing in a keyword returns the Google search results. If you go to about:config in Firefox and look at the keyword.URL field, you can configure it to be [www.google.com]
and that works fine. When you type in a keyword in the address bar, it takes you to the "I'm Feeling Lucky" link directly.

This is what FF does when you type something into the address bar (on FF3 at least). No extra work needed. It just does an 'I'm Feeling Lucky', which is why you usually get the results you want.
All platforms, AFAIK

Anyway to get this to work in firefox?
I used to have the following url as my googlelucky keyword "http://www.google.com/search?q=%s&btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky" however I never managed to get it to do straight to the webpage but it always opened the google search page

Maybe some instructions on how to install this would be great.

Using FF2 (tsk, tsk, I know) and the 'add search engines' addon allows you to enter custom URLs for search engines, such as the 'feeling lucky' url shown above.
Ctrl-E, or Ctrl-K takes you to the search bar, type in "amazon" or w/e, hit enter, and you're feeling lucky.
You can also change the "about:config -> keyword.URL" string as stated above in FF2 to do the same thing in your address bar.
(Ctrl-E is a little bit less work for my left hand than Alt-D is, however.)

This would be very easy to implement as a firefox quicksearch, right?
Something along the lines of:
http: //www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%s
(note the space after http: , so lifehacker doesn't linkify).
Save as a search bookmarklet, and you're set!

@illn00b: I've gotten so used to hitting "Ctrl-Enter" when I enter a url (adds [] and .com to text entered) that I completely missed this - until now. :>

This is the behavior I get by default in Firefox, although it seems to be even smarter than just an "I'm Feeling Lucky" search. If I type "lifehacker" or "coca cola" into the address bar I go straight to the appropriate site, but if i type something a little more obscure, like "hamster wheel", I get the search results. I think it might be based on Google's page rank of the top site, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, it's one of my favorite things about FF. Surprised other people dont use it as much as me.

As I understand it, Firefox doesn't just do an I'm Feeling Lucky search when you type a phrase into the location bar. It uses Google's "Browse By Name" feature to take you to the first result if there's a clear match; otherwise, it'll take you to the Google search page.

I use an old version of Google Deskbar which keeps a search window open on my taskbar at all times. You get to it by typing Ctrl+Alt+ G, and once you're in there, you can press Ctrl+L and get the "I'm feeling Lucky" results.

My favorite FF bookmark is a mix of Google's I'm Feeling Lucky and Wikipedia: "http://www.google.com/search?btnI&q=site%3Aen.wikipedia.org%20%s" and give it a keyword like "w". Whenever you want to check out a wikipedia article, just type "w os x" into your address bar, and Google sends you to the first result for a site search on Wikipedia for "os x", which is (almost always) exactly what you wanted.

Does anyone know if it's possible to give Google an argument to use an I'm Feeling Lucky search (maybe something similar to the site: argument)?
