Contacts Sidebar Beefs Up Thunderbird's Contact Manager
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:01 AM on April 25, 2008
Thunderbird only (all platforms): Thunderbird extension Contacts Sidebar pulls Thunderbird's built-in contact management out of obscurity, making it more usable and accessible. After installing, just hit F4 at any time to toggle Contacts Sidebar's visibility in the Thunderbird sidebar. Once visible, you can easily search, edit, or email contacts from the main Thunderbird interface. We'd mentioned Contacts Sidebar once before among our eight killer Thunderbird extensions, but in light of today's Hive Five contact managers and the 'bird's relatively poor showing, it deserves a mention of its own.

FYI: You can get this to sync (or more like support) gmail contacts with this program: [gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net]

what I use right before is using the Zindus thunderbird extenstion [www.zindus.com] to sync all your contacts with google. But you may find it really annoying that gmail saves EVERY address as a contact. So later I am settled with plaxo and it also syncs with outlook.
Also here at Aggieland, our campus email service use Zimbra (supported by zindus), and I can sync my contacts to campus email and then use pda to sync with campus email server(quite nice they offer exchange server to pda). Whoop~

Any tips on getting contacts sidebar to play well with Lightning? I end up with a very out of proportion Thunderbird.

Thunderbird FTW, but damn, can't I get the simple ability to copy and paste an email address or phone number without opening the properties of a contact? Sheesh.
I hope they fix this and many other weak areas in the contact manager in Mozilla Messaging.

Now that's a useful reminder! I'd downloaded the extension recently after reading the 'killer extensions' post but forgot to install it. Until now.
