Put Facebook Chat in Firefox's Sidebar
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:00 PM on April 24, 2008

The Digital Inspiration blog suggests that Facebook's new browser-based chat system, which we stood up against Gmail's web chat yesterday, works well running inside a Firefox sidebar. To anchor it there, simply add this Facebook Chat popout URL from Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks, and make sure "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is checked. The intended two-column layout can make the sidebar a little intrusive into your actual browsing, but you can resize to a narrow strip and still get chat functionality, simply by clicking inside the sidebar to re-order things.

To have the sidebar appear on the right hand side rather than the left, add the following to your userchrome.css:
/* Display the sidebar in opposite side */
#browser {
-moz-box-direction: reverse;
}

Sweet! I was looking for a way to use the chat feature without having to check on the page every 2 mins :) Great find!

This is pretty cool!
Will we ever see facebook chat on applications like Adium or Pidgin (or even meebo)??

Sweet! If work didn't frown on using Fbook during work hours I'd do it now! ;)
...roll on 5:30pm!

I hope the Digsby people can get this implemented (although there are probably 100 reasons why they can't). Good hack (although FB should be telling us this really)

@Bobly: Noob question: where do you find and how do you edit userchrome.css please?

Maybe I'm just dumb but I can't seem to get it to open up in the sidebar. I've checked the little box in the bookmark's properties but it still opens in a tab. Could it be because of my TabMix Plus settings?

Mac OS X Tip:
Alternatively you can use the same URL in application "Fluid", giving you with a standalone application of sorts.

That's great. You could also use the All-in-One Sidebar to make it less intrusive.

Now the iPhone Facebook page would work rather nicely in a sidebar, I'd have thought...

FBchat doesn't like Firefox 3b5 ... I've added the User Agent extension to fake out the page but get no love (yet) from the sidebar bookmark.
Anyone know where I need to edit the about:config?

Actually, forget what I said about the AiO Sidebar. It doesn't behave right (at least in FF3 beta) -- The text box you type in gets really thin, so you can't see what you're typing, plus the chat windows then cover up the buddy list with no way to move it without closing it. Maybe someone will come up with a workaround.
I'd love it if I could have it in the sidebar and auto-hide it like you can with AiO Sidebar. Anybody know an alternate way to do this?

I used Prism to make it a pseudo-desktop app simply so i don't have to leave it open in a tab constantly. Works pretty well and is really the first time I've found a use for this whole ssb idea. Anyone have any idea if facebook plans on allowing outside development opportunities for this?

I don't get the Facebook Chat. It's pointless most people you need to talk to instantly you already have on AIM/MSN/etc... and those you don't, you can get the username off their page. Never mind its not standalone so whenever someone closes the Facebook page the chat session ends.

This Firefox plugin nicely complements this tip. It shows an alert with Growl (or the standard Firefox alert in Windows and Linux) when you get a new message.

sadly I can't get it to work with Prism or this would be a great combo.
