Create or Browse Timelines at Dipity
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on April 24, 2008
Create or browse interactive timelines with webapp Dipity. The service can create any sort of timeline you want, but it really shines when creating a personal timeline; that's because Dipity integrates with tonnes of popular webapps, like Flickr, Twitter, Last.fm, or any RSS feed, so that all you have to do is provide Dipity with a few usernames or URLs and it'll automatically build your beginning timeline for you. After items are added, click on any item on your timeline or zoom in for a closer look. If you're using it in the personal timeline manner, Dipity is essentially another lifestreaming app along the lines of previously mentioned FriendFeed—it just has a different way of presenting your stream. Dipity also supports manually creating timelines on any subject, but if you want total control over your timeline, check out how to roll your own hosted timeline.

Call me crazy... I don't see the point of this at all. What am I missing?

It's a consolidation app that allows you to make your own media based "Fate's Thread." Unfortunately, there's nothing that provides SpiritFi to post your last post from the beyond.

I thought it was serendipitous to have this only a couple days after I did a search for free timeline software. Then I read the terms of service. There's no implied privacy over your content and they have reproduce rights on it. If I wanted a private timeline set up, this isn't the site for it from what I gathered.

My vertical axis timeline timeline:
2144 hr, curiosity aroused
2145 hr, started looking at links
.
.
.
2151 hr, decided not to bother

I posted a blog entry at [www.edutopia.org] about another fun timeline tool if anyone is interested.

How about a down-loadable type of free timeline software? It would be great for studying history.

Related question: I would like to display some historical information via a timeline-type thing (for an academic project), but I don't want to simply show points in chronological order; I would like to be able to show overlapping date ranges.
Basically, I'd like to be able to plug in start and stop dates, and have a bar representing the whole span of that event, with maybe 30 or 40 events, some spanning up to 40 or so years. Is there something other than a time line I should be using? Nothing I've tried deals with the long time frame AND the dates pre-1900.
Thanks for any advice.

Agree a download is better than online - there are too many websites willing to caretake my personal data (with total security of course..) Just wasted a frustrating half hour Googling for possibles - anyone have any luck/ suggestions? I can -and am- timelining with Excel and text files, but a nice graphic solution would be good. Odd that there aren't any...
PS Dipity is just Dippy at the mo - page not found/ won't load. LH broke it!

@ElderLHconvert: I could see spending some serious time here. I learned about the history of Darfur and caught up on TechCrunch in like 10 minutes...

Speaking of Friend Feed, I wrote an app for importing your Twitter contacts into Friend Feed for any twitter users who want to quickly give Friend Feed a try.

@marisa I'm a little late to the comment party on this post, but check out the link at the bottom of the post for rolling your own timeline. It's about the Simile Timeline project - I used it to create a 2008 Year in Review timeline and it was pretty easy to use.
