Punakea Tags Your Files

Mac OS X only: If Spotlight metadata just doesn't cut it and you want to organise your files by tag, free utility Punakea might be for you. Entering file tags is easy with Punakea: Just drag and drop any files you want to tag either to a pop-up Punakea sidebar, the icon on the Dock, or the app itself. Enter your tags. Then, within Punakea, choose any tag to list its files and also see related tags. In Finder, Punakea actually creates aliases to your files within folders with your tag's name. (You can set Punakea to actually move the files to those folders as well instead of using an alias.) If you're interested in doing more with tags but don't want to get a third party utility involved, check out how guest editor Nick Santilli organizes his files with Spotlight tags. Punakea is a free download with donations requested for Mac Tiger or Leopard only.

@Gina Great app, I had suggested the use of this app in the macheist replacement post. But I read somewhere else (maybe lifehacker?) about another alternative TAGBOT [bigrobotsoftware.com] .

Cool app! Can anyone suggest a similar app for Windows. I've used tag2find but it's still in preview stage and has been since a long time. Plus its search function is not all that great.

The mighty Quicksilver can be used to do this as well. Just make sure you have the File Tagging Module (+) plugin installed. Then simply select the file/files you want to tag, hit your preferred "Load Selected Item" keystroke (mine is cmd-\ as cmd-Esc launches FrontRow) and then start to type "Add" or "Tag" then tab to the third pane and type in your tags. You can then search in spotlight for the tags by prepending with "@". If you are not sure about what you have tagged a file with, or indeed if you have just select the file and hit cmd-i and look in the spotlight comments. Not as fully featured about, but for those obsessed with QS like me, it just another thing you can accomplish with this great app.

Punakea does not let you customize the tags yet (and it uses a very complicated scheme). I cannot import the tags I made by using the Mighty Quicksilver into Punakea. These are the reasons I ditch this nice app. I happen to know another similar tool which I personally think is better: [www.oneriver.jp]
