I usually use CamStudio to record my screen, but Debut looks interesting, as it can export to more than one video format and has a bit more features than CamStudio. Will try out.

for those who are looking for just a webcam solution, try www.yawcam.com -- it's great software for streaming/ftp/simple local recording/etc of webcams (tho not for video chat). I've been using it for about 9 months now doing a time lapse recording of a house being built, and I couldn't be happier with it!

@ph15h -- That probably has to do with your video settings. Check the video options in both the program itself and the windows configuration.

Why is the resolution on the final output so friggn shitty.

Digital artifacts all over the place...Can barely read text on the screen...

I checked the settings and there seems to be no way to make it look better

debut installed some kind of toolbox without asking, that toolbox associated with my audiofiles without asking. not excactly the kind of software i trust... better stick with pryme for webcam-recording.

Is CamStudio the same as Camtasia?

Camtasia is a great program made by TechSmith. They also make Snag-It, which is a fantastic Screen Print capturing software.

tho I wish they had a better lossy codec - I use DivX realtime but it introduces really ugly artifacts with certain combinations (e.g., hot pink on just about anything).

For a free, game-specific recorder, check out [www.wegame.com] - they support many popular titles like World of Warcraft and Second Life (disclaimer: I work for Linden Lab) and their crew is pretty nice too.

A while ago I stumbled over a commercial app w/ a different (IMHO better) approach to screen capturing called VCam [www.e2esoft.cn] . The cool things is that it emulates a capture device and you can stream the desktop into any app (e.g. Skype). Since then I've been looking for a free alternative: no luck yet...

You might also want to check out the latest release of VirtualDub (1.8). I was able to achieve better frame rates when recording my whole desktop in VirtualDub than in Debut Video. The downside is the rather difficult setup of the recording. The options you will need to set it up (pick the resolution, assign a codec and maybe downscale the result) are scattered over too many menus. Pain in the ....
