Skype Launches Unlimited International Calling

Popular VoIP application Skype has introduced a new unlimited international calling plan for a measly $9.95/month [AU - that seems to translate to $12.95 in Aussie dollars, if I read the Skype site correctly]]. That means unlimited calls to any land-line phone in 34 supported countries, including the majority of Europe, Canada, China, and Japan. Additionally, Skype's $3/month unlimited calling plan for the US and Canada is still in play, along with a $5/month Unlimited Mexico plan. The Unlimited World plan does not cover cell phones in all areas, so you may want to verify that your international calling location of choice is covered. As always, Skype-to-Skype calls remain free.

$9.95/month is too expensive. Most VOIP softwares out there offer 4 months of free calls to land-line phones with a much richer country list. I guess that this is an attempt to get some user back - as the whole Skype hysteria seems to be slowing down.

Now I'm more convinced that the iPod Touch needs a Skype client.
Also, does GrandCentral work with Skype? If I were to ever use the iPod Touch as a cellphone replacement, I'd like to have something simple to give people.

Nothing beats Skype-to-Skype on voice quality, but for Skype-to-PSTN (or vice versa) voice quality is no better than any other PSTN solution. If you make a lot of international calls, then $9.95 is totally cheap (but maybe you should talk your friends/contacts into using plain old Skype instead of PSTN). Now, if they'd only get that CallerID situation straightened out (for outbound calls showing your 'Skype-In' number), then I could use it. Till then, not so much.

$9.95/month is way too expensive provided that with most VOIP programs one gets 4 months of free calls to land-line phones. Probably this is an attempt of Skype to get some users back - after the whole hysteria they created before is rapidly disappears .

'Unlimited' = 10,000 mins per month.
thats 13 hours a day.
much and all as I hate marketing people reinventing the word unlimited, I guess thats an unlimit I can live with (especially as its clearly shown on the site

I call my mom in Costa Rica all the time using Skype. The quality can be much better, but other days it just plain works.
As for the price, I think it is Ok. Let me explain I put about $10 dollars every 2 months or so and I talk to her for about 20-30 minutes once a week and it covers it adequately.
So the $9.95 would be good if I was making twice the amount of calls a week to make good use of the money.
I guess I could call her more ;-)

Agreed, for most people this is lame as hell... Probably 90%+ off people would be much better off paying by the minute.
Skype was cool for $14.99 for the whole year. Now with it's minimum connection fees I won't be using it anymore once my credit is gone.
Anyone got a much better alternative?:)

Skype can "pound sand". Just tried their software this morning. Uninstalled the junk after 20 minutes.

The $3/month plan comes in pretty handy when you're in college/university. I've been calling my parents and friends almost daily and it is pretty much worth it, especially after installing a Skype bridge. :)

If they:
a) got a wder country list (come on! WTF is going to be calling Mongolia? And yet Argentina, Brazil, and Russia are not there?)
b)More mobile coverage plz!
then they would be excellent. other than that, good. Might look at this again in college, but not yet. Also, if I gt my eee and fit an internal HSDPA... *hee-hee*

Does skype still charge the connection fees for each call of the unlimited world plan? I hate the connection fees. If skype does not cancel the connection fee charge, I will never come back to skype. I believe many people like me don't like this fee. Maybe this is why skype loses its clients.
