Shutdown or Restart Windows from the Shutdown.exe GUI
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on April 22, 2008
We've covered how to quickly shutdown Windows from the command line or using shortcuts to shutdown.exe as a command line tool, but the Confessions of a freeware junkie weblog points out that shutdown.exe can also be used to great effect through it's lesser-known graphical interface. In fact, the graphical utility provides a simple interface to remotely shutdown one or several computers on your network, making it a particularly useful tool if you need to perform some network maintenance. It may not be something you use all the time, but this built-in tool is handy to have on hand.

This is only somewhat related, and would've been better off if I had thought to list it under harmless Geek pranks for April-1st.
If I feel like messing with co-workers, I'll create a batch file on their system, or a shared lab system, called something like "click me twice, win a prize", or something equally as alluring. The contents of the file? Usually goes something like 'shutdown -s -t 12 -c "You're killing me, Dave."' If they're smart enough, and quick enough, they can abort with shutdown -a. But relatively few people know to do this.

cool! wonder why this is hidden and not a shortcut in the start menu somewhere.

I regularly use this with runas when I am at a computer without network admin priviledges
runas /user:domain\administrator "shutdown -i"
Very useful when working with a computer over Remote Desktop. If it freezes up you can typically still use "shutdown -i" to restart.

Pardon the OT comment, but the verb form is "shut down," not "shutdown." Think of the verb "mark up"--you mark up a price or a paper, you don't markup it. Verbs like this that always take a preposition are confusing, but the rule is simple - two words as a verb (when you're talking about doing something), and one word as the thing done. Thanks - I'll shut up (not "shutup") now!

kinda not the point either, but just a quicker shortcut (I know it works in XP, dunno about vista or older) is (one after the other) winkey + 'u' + 'u' for shutdown, and winkey + 'u' + 'r' for restart. note that if you have alot of stuff in your start menu with a 'u' as a shortcut key, then you might have to hit it twice and hit enter... depends for everyone!
