Mibbit Makes Internet Relay Chat Easy to Jump Into
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:00 PM on April 19, 2008
Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, is the grand-daddy of group chat applications, but it's far from the most inviting and easy-to-grasp apps out there. Mibbit, a free web-based IRC client, aims to change that. Jump right into a chat node if you've got the address or a specific search, or register an account and see what people are talking about. A huge number of tabs can be kept open simultaneously, and registering gives you a Firefox-like ability to launch all your favourite channels upon signing in. If you're looking for tech support, looking for a chance to yak, or just looking to try out IRC, Mibbit is a slick first step.

I'm glad to see this shown. I sent in a tip saying that you guys should talk about IRC once, since it makes getting help on specific subjects a lot easier. You guys should give a good list of irc clients though. A lot of people don't know that they can (legally) get xchat free for windows, and that there are a lot of good alternatives to mIRC.
I think I have a few clients suggested on my site at [www.jprojex.com]

I never found mIRC a hard client to use, besides it's free as is almost every other irc client out there.

IRC is not the easiest thing to jump into, but with a little reading its not to difficult.
Im using colloguy on the mac, But I used Mirc on windows.

what about downloading via IRC? That's is the usual problem with all the apps for IRC - they don't know how to handle dcc correctly...

Mibbit seems to do pretty well as far as form and function go...

@Gonzie: [code.google.com] for the iPhone :D
@Toby Wilkins: should be colloquy, at [colloquy.info] ;)
Anyway. Mibbit is okay as far as web-based IRC clients go. But it's awful in telling you if any errors occured :(

I remember when this used to be IRCatWork...
I rather like MacIrssi as clients go--the learning curve is steep as a blank cliff face but it's a much nicer and more thorough program than colloquy/conversation/etc. once you get to the fiddly bits if you're an IRCop...

Very cool - I actually still use IRC all the time to keep in touch with a few friends; this might be worth using when I don't have mIRC on windows or Snak (my preferred Mac client, but mostly out of history, not out of research) for MacOS.

I really like Mibbit.. I'm sometimes forced to use web based irc clients due to ferocious corporate firewall and this is probably the best I've seen.

@Dereks: People still use DCC? In the age of bittorrent and free online file sharing services? Last I checked, this wasn't 1998...
