Hide Cords with the CD Spindle Cable Organiser 2.0
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on April 18, 2008
If you already liked the original CD/DVD spindle cable organiser, a creative user from DIY web site Instructables has taken it to the next level, cutting a couple of slots in the organiser and using it to conceal desktop cable clutter. We're no strangers to the cordless workspace around here, but this is easily another great option to add to our already extensive list of the top 10 ways to get cables under control. Even better, assuming you've got an unused spindle or two, this method won't cost a dime.

@VizionQuest: Lifehacker is not a channel for you to advertise your site. How many links are you planning on posting today?

Did we really need a video for that?
I think a Lifehacker commenter mentioned this idea in the previous LH post

@Posco Grubb: Hey, that was me!
Great, I finally come up with a good idea and someone else steals the credit. But I'm in college, so I'm used to that...

It still looks a little crude.
I think printing out a pattern and placing it within the plastic cover would make everything 10-times better. Even a plain white sheet of paper would do the trick.

I would not recomend mixing power cables and data cables. Heat could possibly be another issue.
This is still a great storage device for cables that are not in use.

Yep, that mix will produce a bit of EMF
I'd say enough to creep out someone that is really sensible to it.

I just tried this. This was a real pain in the ass to sit there, try and keep all the cables coiled all at the same time and then put the lid on. Not to mention, depending on the amount of cables, you have to adjust the size of the slit you cut originally. If you don't account for that right off that bat, you have to take the lid off, recut, letting all of your cable unwind, and start over again. I just tucked them back under the desk again until I can get some pegboard and some plastic ties and do the job right.

Seems an interesting idea to try out. I was wondering about putting a CD (as a separator) between each of the cable rolls and making the side slots longer (maybe all the way to the top).
Gotta try it out this weekend. If only I can remember to use all the LH tips, my life would be so much better ;-)

Clever, but just as fugly as the cables being outside :P But then again that's my opinion.

Seems like a VERY bad idea.. Inducing current into your interconnect cables may seem like fun for some of you but I ain't going near it!!!

Not a good idea to spin in use cables like that, besides heating it also creates some other interference with data cables.
