Google Maps Predicts Traffic Conditions for Your Travel Time
US-centric: Hot on the heels of Windows Live Maps' traffic-based directions, Google Maps unleashes its own traffic predictions. To use it, just click the Traffic button on the top of a map and then click the change link to switch between live traffic conditions and traffic predictions. The predictions are based on past traffic at those times, similar to Windows Live Maps, but the option to choose your travel time and get predictions based on when you're heading out put Google Maps' traffic predictions one up on Windows Live Maps.

This worked for me yesterday. Early on Friday, I examined my 5pm route to a wedding near NYC and the predicted traffic was spot on. One improvement I would suggest is breaking down 0-30 into more sections. Big difference between 0-5 and 25-30

@rscotta: The reason you don't see cyclists is because most people live 20+ miles from work.
Heck I live 10+ miles, and I wouldn't ride my bike.

@link7: Typically in Chicagoland an accident on either side of the highway means traffic on both sides :(
This is sweet. I wish it had an *expected stay time*, *calculate best leave times* type deal.

If Tomtom incoporates this into their traffic service, I might actually consider paying for it!

Not available here either.. (Netherlands)

I'm not so sure if this was unleashed after Windows Live Maps. I'm pretty sure I have noticed this feature a week or two ago. I don't follow Windows Live Maps, so the only only reference is a post on this site, which I noticed few days ago. (or maybe it was TechCrunch?)

Something that nobody has commented on yet is that now it shows where accidents are! This is awesome; one major thing it's been missing.
On the down side it still doesn't tell you which direction of the freeway the accident is on in the description. Not sure why. Seems like an easy fix

Yep, this isn't available for Canada. Not yet at least...

@berribrand: Hah, so, so true. I was coming up the 405 once at 2am and hit full gridlock for 30 minutes. And Wilshire any time after 3pm, forget it.
I'm not there anymore, but I'm surprised how few cyclists you see, considering how easy commuting by bike would probably be.

Please... this thing is so useless for Los Angeles traffic.
berribrand
Neat, but it doesn't actually update the estimated travel time based on the traffic prediction.

Aww, I read the headline as "Time Travel" and got all excited. :)

I see. It's just fairly limited. It only gives me data for part of the route I had ad I had to zoom in to that part before receiving the "change" prompt.
Claystil
Wait, I don't understand how to change between current and predicitions.
Claystil
US only at the moment? no traffic tab for UK.
