Make Skype Calls from Your PSP
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on April 16, 2008
If you liked the idea of making VoIP calls on your iPod touch or iPhone, but all you've got in your go-bag is a Sony PSP, DIY web site Instructables steps through how to run the popular VoIP application Skype on your PSP. This PSP hack feature isn't new by any means, but the Instructable is detailed and easy to follow along with. We don't have a PSP to test this at Lifehacker HQ, so if you've setup Skype calling on your PSP, share your experience in the comments.

This isn't really much of a hack. Isn't Skype included in the latest PSP firmware? It looks like the instructable is geared towards activating the feature in the firmware in a region that doesn't yet offer it (the author tells you how to change your region to "anywhere but Japan").
Anyway, if you have a PSP and are "anywhere but Japan", just update your firmware. You're done.

@Shocm: I've heard the actual reason was because the newer PSP has more memory available (64Mb vs the fat's 32Mb) and that's required to run Skype.
My biggest problem is that there isn't a decent headset for the PSP, I really want one like the iPhone's with the mic inline in the cord. The only headset I've seen for the PSP is so ugly I wouldn't wear it in public.

I have a PSP and still can't enjoy the wonderful world of VoIP because I don't have the newer "Slim" model. They don't offer Skype of the older (fatter) models. Only reason I can guess is to "encourage" people to buy the newer models.

This is a tutorial if there unsure how to set it up so its pretty cool, i don't like it how only Sony have allowed with exclusive to the Slim, they said ram issues but who knows. Ill be waiting until someone realises a HB app for phat PSP's :).

Ha, nicely done.
Guess it's a hack if you live in Japan, though.

@epchris:
That is my problem as well. I have a slim, but haven't seen a headset that I wouldn't mind using. Now, I am looking for the best one for my Touch.

@epchris - Thanks. Gee I remember with 32Mb was enough memory to get a rocket to the moon and back, now I can't even run Skype with it :-(
ok, I don't actually remember that and I am sure there is someone here who can (and probably will) correct me :-)

Isn't this with the PSP Slim only?

You have to keep the application running constantly to stay online, you should be able to receive calls while gaming...
Anyway, useless when you're not at home - no wifi! And I have a pc to skype from home!
