Convert PowerPoint Presentations to Video at authorStream

Want to share a presentation with friends, co-workers, or the web at large without worrying about who does or doesn't have PowerPoint installed? authorStream, a free presentation sharing site, offers the same kind of embed-anywhere utility as previously-posted SlideShare, but also provides options to download presentations as MP4 video files, putting slideshows with or without audio one step away from YouTube, iPods, DVDs, or whatever format comes in handy. To work as video, presentations must have either recorded narration or rehearsed timings added in PowerPoint, which the Digital Inspiration blog explains in detail at the via link below.

Doesn't OpenOffice handle .ppt files for Linux?
And also, for those who just need video output, Keynote for the Mac does an outstanding job of exporting video files in h.264, Quicktime, iPod, Flash, and YouTube formats. Most of my clients don't have Keynote, but they still can have a manual advancing Quicktime presentation, which is almost as good.

Linux/Unix users? AFAIK, there is no known PPT viewer for that platform. Plus, I've known quite a few people who build a .ppt show for an event (I even did it once myself). I built a show of photos, with the photos filing onto the screen and arranged to music. It was a wonderful show, and I could've done it in another format than .ppt, but I had .ppt and I knew it well. So, why not? Worked like a charm too.
Now, it would've been nice to encode that show to a video format, but I couldn't find any convertors that cost less that $100. So, forget it - it wasn't worth that much to me.

Lots of home users don't have powerpoint, or even know what powerpoint is. Just ask my mom. ;-)

This is great...why require any user to figure out what they need to install to view a proprietary format when you can provide the content in a more online-friendly manner?
I have PPT at work, but I'm much more likely to click 'watch video' than 'download PPT file'.

Mac: With PowerPoint 2004 on a mac, if you select "Save as..." There is an option to save your slideshow as .mov file. With this, you can also select resolution, etc. It's really handy and it's already built-in!
