Best DVD Ripping Tools?
Posted by Adam Pash at 12:00 PM on April 16, 2008
There was once a time when ripping and backing up DVDs was limited to those with hours to spend weeding through convoluted tutorials and difficult-to-use software. Today, a handful of full-featured, easy-to-use DVD ripping tools can back up virtually any DVD in a snap. We've highlighted several of them before, but for this week's Hive Five, we want you to tell us about your favourite DVD ripping tools. Hit the jump for details and to nominate your favourite DVD ripper.
The first round of the Hive Five voting takes place in the comments, where you nominate your favourite. We get hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: Favourite Ripping Tool. If you don't follow this format, your vote may not be counted. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the rest.
About the Hive Five: Our new feature series, the Hive Five, asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get—"Which solution is the best?". Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favourite tools to get a job done. A day later, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For example, check out last week's Best GTD Apps Hive Five.

What's best (Linux or Windows) if I just want to make a 1:1 backup (i.e., no compression) of the main video file along with the 5.1 surround audio track onto an HTPC server? I have no use for captions, other language versions, or any of the other stuff n the DVD.

I use a combination of two command line tools to make DVD backups and DVD rips that will break even the newest copy protection:
ddrescue (linux): Makes an ISO file that is an exactly duplicate of the DVD without the intentional ARccOS read errors. This is the best way to backup a DVD.
vobcopy (linux): a simple command line utility that will read a dvd (mounted from the ISO file you just made with ddrescue), find the title with the most chapters and decrypt it without transcoding for a PERFECT rip. If you want to do this directly from the ISO without mounting you can use the dvdbackup command which also works well.
For ripping/transcoding I use dvd::rip -- works great!

@VizionQuest: [en.wikipedia.org]
On February 23, 2004, Judge Susan Illston of the Northern District Federal Court for California ruled that 321 Studios' products violated copyright law and ordered an injunction that prohibited the sale of DVD X Copy products in the United States within seven days of the injunction. 321 Studios proceeded to remove all products from the US retail channel and from the [www.dvdxcopy.com] website. The ruling caused 321 Studios to shut down with the company finally ceasing operations in August of 2004.

I sometimes use RipItForMe which is just a front end for DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink but only when the encryption can't be broken by DVD43.
I'd like to use Adam's DVD Rip and DVD Play but I prefer ISO rips and DVD Play doesn't like where I have VLC installed (I install most apps on a seperate partition instead of in Program Files).

On a more serious note, I pick this over handbrake because since it doesn't do any conversion/compression, it lets me rip fast while I have the disk. I still use handbrake later on the dvd image, but it just takes too long when your friend wants their movie back an hour ago.
As you can tell, my experience is limited to the Mac. Perhaps the final article should be divided by platform?

I tried a ton of other rippers, particularly dvd::rip in Ubuntu, to try and rip some anime, but I could never really get things to work the way I wanted. Subtitles wouldn't show, or the frame rate would come out too fast, so I gave up.
Then I heard about HandBreak, and decided to give it a shot. After one session, I was convinced: this is the easiest way to rip DVDs. Select the source, select the chapter, enter the output video and audio formats, select subtitles if you want them, and boom, you've ripped a DVD. I especially love using it to rip episodes from my Venture Bros, Justice League, and various other movies into an iPhone friendly format. Makes doing warmups at the gym go by a little faster. I can rip an episode in as little as 10 minutes, and a whole movie in about an hour.
What's even better is no matter which platform I'm on (Windows, Linux, or my Mac), I can get it for them.

I like HandBreak for its simple interface but powerful options. The presets make format-shifting easy and (last I checked) there were 18 of them including iPhone/iTouch, PS3, PSP, and XBox 360. I'm sure other apps have presets but I still find the interface easy enough to change the settings. Batch shifting is also pretty easy to use.

Vote Transcode Rip: Handbrake
Vote Transcode: VisualHub
The easiest way for me to rip reliably is with AnyDVD and DVDShrink on a PC. Other ways work, but AnyDVD and DVDShrink seems the fastest with the easiest options for custom resizing to fit on DVD-5 (and most likely to get pass protections). This is for creating a DVD copy.
If I want to rip a DVD to a digital transcode to watch on PSP, iPod, or on the computer/HTPC then Handbrake is awesome. Handbrake is not for DVD to DVD ripping.
If I already have a ripped DVD or need to convert something already digital (transcode) then VisualHub is the most reliable for me. It transcodes with excellent results, does batch processing, and has all the preset options anyone could need.

Okay, so it's a complex vote, but here's my rationale:
MacTheRipper quickly and easily gives you a Video_TS file that you can then plug in to either Toast or Handbrake, which is advantageous when you just have a DVD for a short time. Toast and Handbrake are both great at what they are designed to do- Toast for disc burning from a Video_TS image, or creating a virtual DVD, and Handbrake for conversion to iPod (though it does take a really long time)

Maybe I am just old school , but I use Auto Gordian Knot .. the only reason is that I like div x , just seems to be the smallest file size and the best quality picture . Of course this means I have to have a really old version of divx under vista for some reason the newer Divx doesn't really play well.. I am very interested in what other people do . ideally I would slip a dvd in and wait a bit and have a divx ( or other small , highish quality file) I am lazy and my GF would not really deal with more than a two click process.. any suggestions?

I would have to second this. It does make massively huge ogg files if you want quality (and kinda lame quality if you want small files, at least from the DVDs I was ripping (Season 1 of Stargate SG-1)), but it did work VERY well and I would use it again for future ripping. The huge ogg files could always be reencoded into Divx or something with little quality loss, too.

Works great (if you can find the universal binary version), advanced ripping options are great if you want to do extra things like editing the movie (or adding a commentary track courtesy of Rifftrax), or getting some good high-quality excerpts for use in media development classes (combine MacTheRipper with MPEGStreamclip and you get nearly flawless copies that you can edit to your heart's content).

@ShadyPghGuy: Exactly.
Incidentally, before processing the newly ripped files in DVDShrink, drag the folder over to the interface of MenuShrink (Although home page no longer there, I found you can download here: [www.afterdawn.com]).
I have saved up to 1500MB by shrinking the menus (greater amounts have been reported)--yet they maintain their functionality with or without audio. All that extra disc space can be used toward a better quality video. It works for me every time.

AnyDVD is the single greatest tool in any Windows-based ripping arsenal. It's not a ripper itself, but simply sits in the background as a device driver and removes all disc encryption allowing you to use ANY ripping application you want to rip the DVD.
I use DVD Shrink when I don't care as much about the quality of the final movie and I'm planning on burning it to a single-layer disc. I use CloneDVD to make ISO images of the discs I really care about preserving in their entirety.
In Mac OS X though, I haven't found a single app that works that well. I've tried Handbrake and Mac The Ripper and all the others I've found, but none of them hold a candle to AnyDVD and DVD Shrink or CloneDVD. The Mac ripping applications usually have horrible interfaces, only work half the time, or crash giving some cryptic error message. Thank god for Boot Camp...

DVD Shrink, then burn with Nero. I also rip just the main movie, and make an MP4 with Super encoder for ipod use. I have a 1.8Ghz AMD from 2002 so DVD Shrink is a 3-4 hour rip, an overnight process. Then another 3-4 hours to encode with SUPER. So with those kinds of times I need reliability and so far both programs have delivered.

The best feature, in my opinion, is "cluster mode", where you can setup a cluster of computers to share the task of transcoding a batch of ripped DVDs.

Tried many over the years but am loyal to these 2. Can de-crypt, rip & burn absolutetly anything on disk. Continous updates and multiple format output options.
BTW, let's be clear that there is a difference between 'ripping' and 'burning' software. Ripping is taking the data from the factory pressed disk and converting it to another format to save on a hard drive, etc. Burning is simply writing the data to some other media (CDR, DVDR, etc.)
The film studios have encrypted most DVDs to prevent this sort of activity, so now many ripping software also has to break the encryption to complete its job of reformatting the data. When voting I think it should be clear which type of software you are naming.

DVD Fab when Shrink chokes, but I *loves* me some shrinkage, getting a DL down to a more manageable 4.xx GB image with minimal impact to quality. I don't use Shrink to burn discs, because it's really just a pass-through to whatever image-burning ware you already have. But Shrink is Plan A to rip, and DVD Fab is Plan B for the few times Shrink doesn't like the disc or whatever.

Really I don't have lots of space to just keep the raw dvd data so I shrink it as much as I can. But I do believe in quality and AutoMKV is better in that regard than anything I've tried, before just doing it by hand.
Handbrake, AutoGK, Ripit4Me has nothing on AutoMKV in terms of the quality you can get. It has tons of options which can be a down side, but if you understand what you're doing you'll get a much better end result.
