From 10,000 Emails to Inbox Zero in 24 Hours
Posted by Gina Trapani at 9:00 AM on April 15, 2008

Blogger Darren Rowse finally got fed up with multiple inboxes stuffed with thousands of unprocessed email messages and took a day to clear them out. First he consolidated five accounts into a single Gmail inbox. Then he unsubscribed from newsletters he didn't read, put some heavy-duty filters into place, and topped it all off with a heavy lean on the Archive button. Not bad for a Sunday morning's work.

I imagine he has about 5,000 unhappy people he never answered...? :)

That's too much time. Why not erase everything and keep the 50 most important mails? email is very much clutter.

Funny enough, I did the same thing on the same day, although I didn't have 5,000 emails. I did what VakeroRokero is suggesting-deleted all the things I hadn't read in a while or just plain don't remember and kept only the (at the time) 36 most important emails. I didn't plan that number, it just came out to that amount. It's very nice to be able to see my entire inbox on one page.

I finally got into the habit of filing an email when it comes into my Outlook at work. I get antsy when I have more than 10 emails not filed.
But I was just evaluating my Gmail inbox this afternoon and I realized it looks like a messy closet.
I guess it's easier for me to drag and drop in Outlook than it is to define a filter. :/

Ok, 10,000 emails. Ah, the joy of typos.

I realized today after talking to some people at work I'm like the ONLY person in my office that doesn't check their mail religiously ever five minutes or less... wonder if that means something is wrong with me.

@covaro: not trying to sound offensive, but maybe others don't send you important email related to your job?

It's been several months now since I've "converted" to Inbox Zero (and the Trusted Trio). And life is good.

I had a bad experience clicking "Unsubscribe" from a devious newsletter - it triggered a malicious macro. Now I use Filters and Blocking options for unfamiliar sites.

I use Eudora with the Spamfilter which along with filters is really effective. Using a free mailbox just locks you into whatever they are making you use.

I don't understand what's so interesting about this? Don't most people filter their email? Doesn't every email client have filters? As far as I can tell, I have the same functionality with my email client.
I do have something valuable to add to this thread, however. I recently began using greylisting with my mail server and can say that it's the best thing I've ever done to combat spam. I do still receive some spam, but only like a couple messages per week. It has significantly cut down on the amount of spam I receive.

and maybe one day someone will explain to me the purpose of having an "empty" inbox. What difference does it really make?

soo...he forwarded email, and unsubscribed from lists, then deleted his email? Wow, what an innovator...sounds more like he needed content for his blog.

I spent half an hour at work today setting up my outlook filters. I think it's a habit I picked up from tinkering with my gmail so often. I went from having an unorganized inbox of 1000+ to a much cleaner and well-organized inbox of 800+. It was well worth it as I was probably spending 5-10 minutes a day dragging and dropping e-mails into folders.

I did roughly the same thing myself.
I know it doesn't sound like a lot but it really does simplify things.
Now I am just wondering if I can get my voicemail in there...
