Google Still To-do Listless
Posted by Gina Trapani at 6:08 AM on April 13, 2008
A pulled blog post led some to think that Google might be launching a to-do list product, but the Google employee fessed up that the suspicious post was just an accident. Too bad, because Google could use a to-do list app.

I got tired of my paper todo lists this week and started using MS Office's tasks. I have them displayed on a HTML page which I have open in a Samurize config.
So far it's working well but I haven't figured out a way to have my tasks archive themselves and not display on the page but still have some record of them.

I thought there was talk at one point of google acquiring "remember the milk", this would be a easy solution to this problem, seeing as it(rtm) already has a lot of gmail and gcal integration possibilities.

At this point, I don't even want an online todo list. I've never been satisfied with any of them.
What I really want is a dropbox invite so I can just sync my todo.txt file across multiple machines easily.

It'd be really nice if Google would just buy Remember the Milk!

@yooper1019 - hell yeah... but no matter what I've tried (Remember the Milk, GTD Inbox - etc..) It's hard to find anything that will play nicely with the Lotus Notes AND MS Outlook.. which would be ideal for us corporate tools.

TODOIST is the answer.

Ugh, how long I've wished they would! I've tried a bunch, but it would be so rad to have them all together in my Google Apps page. *hangs head and waits*

I'm a big fan of Google Desktop's Todo gadget, in large part because it's *so* simple-to-use in the sidebar and very responsive. I enjoy being able to reorder items and hide completed ones - *essential* features!
Of course, I wish there was the ability to create categories that can be collapsed/expanded - right now, I manually put a word in square brackets like "[WORK]" in front of the todo. But, I wouldn't want such an elegant utility to be overburdened by features I'll never use.

RTM is great, as long as you don't actually have to use the real RTM website because it's awful. I can only stand RTM because of the gmail integration.

Toodledo works for me. Tighter integration with Google products would be nice though. Perhaps a summary right on the Gcal page. mmmm... greasemonkey?

Seems to me to be the logical next step in their gmail/gcal suite. There are several online companies (network solutions, GMX, etc) which put these together (a quasi online Outlook), users would hope Google wouldn't leave them out in the cold. I think they could improve on a "todo" list greatly. Too bad they need user prodding to step up to the plate.

@xxdesmus: Agreed. They're iPhone site is also well put together. I pretty much only use RTM through Gmail.

I just switch b/w a google docs list (non-time sensitive) or agenda mode in gcal (time sensitive)

To-Do List gadget on my iGoogle homepage does the trick for me (that and an always open notes page on my crackberry)

Like IMAP, Google will probably deny working on a todo app until they launch it. Not having a categorized list manager for GTD has kept me away from using GCal as a PIM. Todo, Gmail and GCal integration would be the Holy Grail.

Have you seen Google App Engine? There is an app there called ToDone. I know its not an official Google made application but its a start.

Why should Google make a ToDo list app when there are already so many out there? Are we saying that if Google does it, it will be above-and-beyond the other apps currently available?
@xxdesmus: I agree about RtM's site being horrendous! Unlike Sandy, who has a very quick learning curve, I kept getting confused and couldn't follow their directions because (I think...) you have to be in a certain screen to follow certain directions and that wasn't clear. When I initially signed up, I couldn't figure anything out (unlike with Sandy), but when I was finally determined to give it a go, it was a long frustrating night of trying to get it down so I could actually use it. Then I installed the Gmail interface. Problem solved.
@tastyfoot: Ha ha! You're right!

I take a really simple approach and have a Ta-da List ([www.tadalist.com]) with all the things I need to do, then tick them off when they're done.
I use the feed from the list in Firefox to keep track of it all.

I've been using the Google Calander, which has a 'quick add' option which is super easy to use, Sandy is subscribed to my google calander and between her sendign me reminders from the goog-cal and the todos that I send to her, it's a pretty smooth running machine... I just look at the Daily Digest sent to me by Sandy in the morning and you can look at the todo on the site.

I've tried Remember the Milk - I've tried the Lightening Task View - but not to satisfaction. Since my desk is always littered with Post Its - I tried the online version of that - which led me to NoteZilla and now I am content. I was able to sync them with my Palm and I'm working on syncing them with my Q. It's all good!

I find that ToDone [to-done.appspot.com] (which is a newly released Web App running on Google Apps engine) is more than sufficient for me.

I hope that nobody has mentioned this before, but I started a GMail account that is solely used as a todo list. This gives me access to adding and viewing todo items from any location. Additionally, this account is added to my Jott account as "My Todo List". Therefore, when I would like to add a todo item, I simply call Jott, ask to jott "My Todo List" and dictate the item. Jott prints the short text as the subject line, which allows you to view the item without opening the email.
An added benefit of having this list as an email account is that I can forward tasks easily to others.
One more thing: I added this email account to my Blackberry and now have a todo list that I can dictate to "on the fly".
Sweet, eh?

I made a little google calendar to todo list gadget for Vista and Netvibes if anyone is interested. I've been using it for about 3 months now and it's really nice.

Well, that's actually kind of a relief, as I tend to think that Google's domination can tend to discourage innovation -- at least, it tends to for me. Why invest time in developing something that Google will inevitably invent in a couple of months?
Todoist gets my vote, for its hierarchical projects and tasks. Might as well plug this too... I've written a Firefox add-on which (properly) puts Todoist in the sidebar.
