Data Recovery Wizard Pro Free Today Only
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:09 AM on April 11, 2008

Windows only: The Giveaway of the Day web site is offering the normally $90 Data Recovery Wizard Professional software as a free download today only. If you've accidentally deleted important files or documents, chances are the Data Recovery Wizard Professional edition can recover them (if another process didn't overwrite the disk space with new data). The trick with software like this is to install it before file loss panic, so you don't write the software installation files over your deleted documents. The Data Recovery Wizard Pro download is free for the next nine hours or so only at Giveaway of the Day, so grab it while you can—and it's for Windows XP/NT/Vista only.

One problem with software like this, is that the dozens of different packages all work in a half-dozen different ways with varying degrees of effectiveness, and what will recover ONE lost file on ONE corrupted disk will not do the same for ANOTHER lost file on ANOTHER corrupted disk.
Add to that the extreme crippling most demos of recovery software suffer from, and you can even figure out for sure if a program will do what you need it to do.
Not a problem for an organization with a budget, just get one or two licenses for everything that looks like it might work. But for an individual, not so much.
So yeah, I'll be trying this. (I've got a flash card full of vacation photos, and a hard disk with a few others that didn't get backed up in time)

@Nighthawke:
Yeah, so this won't do you OR them any good if you don't have any data needing recovery RIGHT NOW.

@Nighthawke: Actually, I don't think that's required. With most of the GOTD software, only the first setup.exe file has to be run before the day's end.
To get around that, run the downloaded setup.exe to extract the true installation files. I'm pretty sure the extracted files don't do any kind of time check and can be installed whenever you want.

Is this any better than Undelete Plus?

The other problem with this scheme is that you NEED to install the software within 9 hours after downloading or the free bit is disabled.

@TechnoDestructo: Actually, no. Like all GOTD software, the full version is totally free if you install it and register it before midnight. Once installed, you can use it as long as you like. I have several free programs running that I got from their site, and I have never had problems running any of them.
Of course, some will complain that if you reformat, you lose the free software, which is true. To get around that, I just create an image of my entire C: drive.

Woohoo! $90 software for free!
Unfortunately, I don't really use this kind of program...
...too bad it isn't something like Adobe Flash or Finale 2008 that's free...
Oh well, might as well download it anyway. It is free after all.
However, you really have to consider that there are probably a bunch of freeware programs that could do this software's job BETTER. I don't know any off of the top of my head, but, once again, I don't really use this kind of program.

Regarding the capabilities of this program: I just used it to recover a bunch of files lost to a corrupted MFT on an NTFS drive. About half the data recovery programs and/or demos I've tried can't even FIND the files let alone recover them, and some that could get some can't get all of them.
AND this is pretty straightforward and easy to use. I'm pretty sure my dad could figure this out if he had to.
Definitely recommended.

It was a WinRAR archived download.
I just extracted it to a new folder & it was automatically activated without my installing it yet.
The confusing part is that it tells you to install it when it means extracting it.

Also BTW, I would immediately recommend Recuva over this for most "oh crap I deleted something" jobs, because Recuva is portable and can be run from a USB drive. This would seem to be more useful if you have another drive that's messed up(not the drive this program is installed to), and need to recover files off of it, as this has the "Complete Recovery" and "Partition Recovery" modes. That is something that isn't common in most of the freeware data recovery programs, I believe.

@eeefresh: @Nighthawke: FYI: This particular giveawayoftheday only packages the setup file inside the timed setup.exe wrapper, IE: you just need to run the setup.exe file(from giveawayoftheday), then it extracts the setup.exe(of the program) to another folder, so you can hold on to that and install it later if you need.

@zeta113: So, to summarize your post:
1. You don't use software like this.
2. There may be other software out there, also for free, that may do the job as well or better.
3. But you don't know.
Thanks for your contribution to Lifehacker.
