Flickr Adds Video

Photo-sharing site Flickr throws its hat into the ring with YouTube and Google Video and becomes a photo and video sharing site today. Flickr Pro members (only) can now upload up to 90-second video clips to the site, and everyone, pro member or not, can view and comment on the clips. The reason for the 90-second limit? The Flickr Video Help pages explain:
We're not trying to limit your artistic freedom, we're trying something new. Everyone has endured that wedding video, where even the bride will fast-forward to the "good bit." In fact, even Tara at FlickrHQ hasn't made it past the first 90 seconds of her own wedding video.Fair enough—we like creative constraints. Check out the Flickr Video! Video! Video! group for some of the first clips to make it to the site.

I agree that Flickr probably doesn’t wanna just become like YouTube. The 90 second/pro account limit is smart. If you want longer, go to YouTube or upload to Pixamo.

Um, why? Hopefully the time limit will stay. It would be cool to be able to do some time lapse stuff like that. But I go to YouTube for stupid videos. I don't need Flickr eating more of my time.

I like the intention of video "snapshots" of everyday life, but i'm interested in seeing what creative stuff people will cram into those 90 seconds.

Flickr! video is apparently having some issues on OS X right now... just black static boxes. Same in every browser, Flash 9 is installed and works fine on other sites.

Photobucket has had video for over a year now, and you're not required to pay them or limited to 90 seconds. I just don't get the flickr appeal.

With the 90 seconds limit, exit the short films or fan musical clips. Hello bad quality-uninteresting phone videos.

Contrary to my fellow commentators (commenters?), I'm delighted to see this. Just yesterday I dumped the contents of my little Canon onto my laptop, all the photos went on to flickr, but where to put the couple of little avis?
At the moment if I want to share my modest record of an event, the photos go one place and the movies go somewhere else. I've yet to explore this feature to see how movie clips will work with photos in sets (if at all), but it's most certainly a welcome development in my book.

I think this will be quite interesting. It's kind of annoying when someone sends me a youtube vid and I see that the clock is closer to the 10 min mark - I usually have to bookmark it for later. When this grows, I'll know that if it's a flickr video link, it'll be a short but sweet 1:30.

Flickr doesn't want to become another youtube/dailymotion/veoh/metacafe so to them 90s is appropreate. Go to youtube if you want to upload longer vids.

Hmmm... and I just left flickr too. Sigh.
Its a nice feature, and I get why thy limited it to 90seconds.. I actually like that idea. But flickr has been really bugging me recently. If you have a pro version its great.. but for free members its really limiting.. and the fac t that once you are pro you essentially have to stay pro for life is nasty. It also seems to get way more hype than any other service... which it definitely initally deserved. But until this announcement its essentially made no improvements in the last 3 years.
For those looking for longer video clips, but without the youtube/dailymotion feel and with more of a creative community - check out www.vimeo.com
Personally I just used Migratr to move all my flickr pics to 23. Much smaller than flickr, but so far i prefer it.

This was one of the features "Flickr" was lacking. It will be nice to upload some photos and now some video's onto Flickr.

hmm the 90 sec time limit is interesting I like the "long photo" reference, It really makes you think about whats absolutely necessary to portray the clip.....

YouTube's commenter culture is so uninviting that I avoided registering an account with them. Flickr's, on the other hand, is so positive that I am looking forward to this and am not afraid to make my own videos now.
Genuinely excited!

@soul_grind: No improvements in last 3 years?
* Geomapping?
* Sets/collections?
* Places? -- flickr.com/places ?
* Camera stats -- flickr.com/cameras ?
* Update in 'Organize' function ?
* Personal statistics?
* New flickr uploader?
* ... and now the video?
2 bucks per month is not too much to ask for all this!

@Raul_Pevre: flickr is class!! If you are serious about learning photography, flickr is the best place. You get critics on your pics and you get to learn by observing/studying the techniques that others use. Joining local area flickr groups can be super-educational. When the members of such groups organize get-togethers, you get the 1st person learning experience and also try out the different photography equipment that different people use. ...
...
I can go on and on.
You need to plunge into flickr to enjoy it :)

Creative constraints are a great way to motive people and get different things out in the open. Video quality seems great as well.

I posted my first Flickr videos yesterday @ [www.flickr.com] :) encouraging the Second Life community to get more involved!
I don't like the 90-sec. time limit, but also noticed YouTube had some minor UI adjustments today (including borkage of my channel which stopped showing playlist as a grid).
@whitlock: I've wondered why that is, and have noticed the same thing! Demographics or other reason?

90 seconds is pretty weak. So much for all of those live concert clips.
