Drag and Drop Text and Images in Firefox
Posted by Gina Trapani at 2:15 AM on April 8, 2008
You can get around Firefox fast without taking your fingers off the keys, but mouse fans will be happy to know there are a whole lot of ways you can get things done in the 'fox by dragging and dropping text and images as well. For example, you can drag and drop:
CyberNet News runs down more more drag and drop goodness in Firefox; hit the link to see the rest.
- a URL (hyperlinked or not) onto an empty area on the tab bar to immediately have that URL opened in a new background tab.
- an image onto the address bar to immediately have that image open in the current tab.

Maxthon has been doing this for years! what you can accomplish with plugins, maxthon does it by default..

@redindian: What's your point? Firefox also does this by default without a plug-in.

@redindian: Firefox does not need plugins to do this and has also been doing it for years by default. it's just a feature that some might not be aware about, which is why it was mentioned.

I foolishly tried the dragging and dropping of single words to URL bar feature by dragging the word "drag" to a new tab. Not a page ill be revisiting. Now I have to clear my browsing history or the misses will be worrying that I'll Be stealing her clothes!

I am upset I find this out only after using firefox for 2+ years.

@AngryBadger: You just know I had to drag "drag" in the URL bar, right! Love the disclaimer before you enter the site though.

The second "feature" is especially useful with google image search results. (maybe yahoo, haven't tried it). When access to an image is annoyingly blocked by the website/server, etc., you simply drag it to tab bar or address bar, to have full access the the image. No idea how that works but it's gotten me some good finds in the past. ;)

Here's my favorite drag and drop feature. I'm running firefox beta on my ubuntu pc, and I noticed a few cool things.
1. When I drag a picture, the picture is actually dragged.
2. If I drag a picture onto my desktop, it is automatically downloaded and the file is placed on my desktop.

@ricardo.slacker: You can even open a folder then drag the image over the folder's taskbar icon, wait for its window to appear and drag the image into the window to save it. I'm using this instead of right-click->save-image-as.
You can also drag text into to search bar to start instantly a query, or drag favicons to the bookmarks menu to bookmark a page.

You can also drag a URL to your desktop to create a quick link.

Wow - amazing tip. How did I not know this? And as I just discovered, if you drag an image to a blank space in the tab bar, it will open in a new tab behind the current tab (at least with my settings).

A few times I've dragged across an image in Firefox by mistake (because it was text saved as an image file) and it always gets saved to the hard drive.

@BurN_87: Don't feel bad, I've been using Photoshop for over a decade, and I'm still discovering things that were in there before I'd ever fired it up...

My favorite mouse shortcut in Firefox is middle clicking on a link to open in a new tab. I also accidentally found out that holding the middle button while clicking the left or right button changes the active tab.
I like that you can drag selected words to the search bar and have it run a new search. I don't like that there doesn't seem to be a way to make the searches spawn in new tabs.
People are amazed at all the shortcuts I use. Especially Win+R, Win+m, Win+e and of course Win+L "What? You mean I don't have to do ctrl+alt+del, then click lock to lock the workstation?"
However just today I tried Ctrl+C on a Windows error message because I wanted to extract the text and it didn't work.

Only after making my earlier (first ever here) comment I thought it's unlikely the Drag de Go FF addon isn't mentioned here. And I was right: [lifehacker.com]

Actually, you can accomplish much more if you install the Drag de Go ([addons.mozilla.org]) addon: No need to drag all the way up to the tab bar, just drag and drop anywhere on the page. you can also use this method to fill the Find box, or use the direction you're dragging to perform different actions.

There's also the DragDropUpload extension for dragging and dropping files from your file manager or it's sidebar into web pages.

Drag n droppin is been around for as long as i can remember, the url thing hmm ok maybe not that old...but since windows 95 you can drag pics to open alone in the browser.
You can also drag n drop pics to your desktop to quick save them in your computer. I first did it with a site that had right click disable and i was too tired to go to the source and find the pic. Also when XP came out with the little save as, print (n whatever else was there) button on mouse over pics i remember seeing friends using that damn button and going thru all the SAVE AS pic window and i told this trick to them and they were amaze.

@yochanan_marqos:
DragDropUpload is great. I use it all the time for sending attachments via email especially. Just drag the file over the link to attach and it does the rest for you... Plus, you can open it in your sidebar to pull from folders into your browser.

I also drag and drop URLs to my bookmarks. A neat trick if you find yourself on a site you find useful and just want to bookmark the start/home page:
Usually the logo in the header area is linked to the site home page, if it isn't Flash, usually you can just click and drag the link into your bookmarks. For some reason this won't work for me on Lifehacker though, I'm not sure why :(
Hey johnsmith1234: To get your search to spawn in a new window, middle click the search button.

Is there a way to increase the space to the left of your tabs (when you have many tabs open)? I often have tons of tabs open and dragging a URL to a 7 pixel space can be tricky...
