Download Any File or Web Page with Opera Mini 4.1 Beta
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:29 AM on April 8, 2008
Opera has released a new beta version of their Mini browser for cell phones and PDAs that includes pretty serious improvements for anyone who's serious about their hand-held browsing—namely, actual file downloading, uploading to select online services like Flickr and Gmail, and saving of web pages for offline access. Previous versions of Mini, like most mobile browsers, could only handle files that the browser or the device itself knew what to do with, but Mini now lets you save files and web pages to the device's storage, assuming it has a working version of the JSR-75 access protocol running in the background. Opera also threw in page-based "Find" searching and claims its server-based page cache is running 50 percent faster in recent tests. Opera Mini 4.1 beta is a free download for most devices that work with Java.

Neato, but will it work on my Palm Centro without crashing? Blazer stinks, but I guess I asked for it by getting a smartphone with a circa-2001 OS...

I have an HTC Kaiser, and even though it has more features than the iPhone, the only way to bring it up to par with Apple's device is to install Opera Mini. This is by far the best mobile browser available.

Opera also through in page-based "Find" searching and claims ...
Should read "... threw in ..." I know you know better. Just being a pedant.

The last version was great. I look forward to any improvements. Will test tonight on my Palm TX. Hopefully this will fix my copy's "out of Memory" error that just started about 2 uses back.

You can also run it on your PC:
[my.opera.com]
It's good for those days when you're on a slow internet connection for whatever reason.
The instructions say to grab Opera Mini 4.0, but 4.1 works just as well!
I think the one feature that has annoyed me with 4.1 is the address entry. I preferred the previous address entry over the one with the autocomplete.
For those who want that, you can get that back by going to:
Menu > Tools > Settings (or #8). Then untick "Direct address input".

It's nice, but it seems to miss T9 functionality when entering text, or did I overlook it?

For those of you with Nokia smartphones, this now means you can download a .torrent file with Opera Mini and open it with SymTorrent.

With a 4GB memory card and Wi-Fi, it's just as fast as my PC and uses a lot less power when left on overnight.

Don't forget to shrink it down to a reasonable size to install on your phone with UPX[upx.sourceforge.net] - a great program for those of us that run HTC-WM devices. Saved over a meg on my last Opera install.

@PReDiToR:
This is Opera Mini they're talking about, which is J2ME and the beta comes in at under 120k. UPX doesn't do Java, does it?
