Best Reader Life Hack Final Faceoff
Posted by Gina Trapani at 12:00 PM on April 7, 2008
For the past two weeks, we've given out over a dozen autographed copies of our new book, Upgrade Your Life, to readers who submitted their best life hacks to us and saw them featured here on Lifehacker. Now we want to know which one of the winning hacks you thought was the coolest and most useful.
Thanks to everyone who wrote in with their ideas, projects, tricks, tips, photos and screenshots.

Are you considering sharing some of the other submitted ideas that were not quite good enough to win a book?

Name and number thumb drive. Learning how to convert youtube stuff to mp3 is a good skill, but Matt's process is ridiculous considering how sites like zamzar and vixy.net are so much simpler than the methods he described.

I voted for the Custom Firefox sidebar page. There are so many practical uses for it that virtually anyone can find some sort of way to utilize it. I'm going to brush up on my php and whip together something to write home about. ;)
Pegboard organizer is still the coolest, but I don't think it deserves the vote since its step for step the same hack thats been published on this site X times already.

It seems to me that the pegboard organizer, respectable though it may be, might get a disproportionate number of votes since it's the first in this list, and people tend to be more likely to click on the first one they see.
But such is democracy.

Wow, great list. Look like I've missed them. I'm gonna read them before submitting :D

Where's the "none of the above" option?

The pocketmod is my favorite of them all, though for neither travel nor exercise. It's just a great way to get organized and I evidently missed the other posts about it. Beth's tip on customizing it better was what made the grade for me.
As for the others, I don't really have a need for them. Probably if I could vote for a second one it would be the darkened Windows, but I'm too chicken to monkey around with dll files so I'm probably not going to try it. That's too bad because I'm sick of the same 'ol thing.

I second wildness' "where's the "none of the above" option?".

Quite a few good hacks. After discarding some "too obvious to make it to the short-short list" (like David's Darkened Windows, which is good nonetheless), and also some "nice hack but only for ultra-geeks" (e. g., Martin's surf while you Pedal, or Ray's Spamfilter), I've picked Beth's PocketMod. Simple enough for everyone to do it, but far from being obvious: a great hack hanging around, waiting for someone to pinpoint it.

@wildness: That would be ctrl + F4.

@Urza: It was a great tip but there was no provided code examples so while it may have showed people what they can do it doesn't help them as you still have to go out and code everything yourself.

@Woodsyx:
Yes, that will be an amazing extension when someone builds it!

You should hold a run-off for the top vote-getters, none of these is going to even approach a majority share. Then you could change the list order to shake up the possibility that the first item receives easy votes.

I was hoping for more support for the nerdcycle. Every time I'm on the elliptical, I wonder how I could be on my laptop at the same time. This gave me some great ideas.....
