Grow in Small Spaces with the Wall-Hanging Plant Holder

A wall-hanging plant holder makes growing plants in your cramped apartment a realistic endeavour, but there's a catch. As is, the plant wall retails for a steep $250—which is why this one's labelled as a weekend project. From the little schematic included on the image from the web site (above), a fearless DIYer could tackle this one for a fraction of the asking price. Whatever you choose, this wall-hanging plant holder could be perfect for indoor or outdoor use, and is reminiscent of the previously mentioned upside-down tomato planter.

Very nice, but I don't think I would put one above a leather couch.

I love the idea of maximizing growing space in this way. However, there are several considerations before going with something like this.
1. Plants can be messy. They drop leaves so whatever is under the planter will get leaves on it.
2. Water next to a wall like that can be a recipe for trouble. either be very careful while watering, or choose another place to hang it. You don't want it seeping into drywall.
3. There would obviously be a need for some serious lighting above the unit for your plants to thrive. The amount of light necessary to grow the plants in the picture, may not be tolerable to some people.
But I like the design. And it's tempting to get out my tools and build one this weekend. But I think it would be better placed outside on a deck railing where the elements like water and plant debris are less likely to cause long term problems.

this would be pretty spiff. I just bought a house that has a nice deck outside, it would be cool if I could set up a bunch of these (by set up i mean build my own biger version) to essentially cover parts of the deck surroundings with these guys. Then of course pull rainwater off the gutters to water them lol

So, let's see... two drywall mudding pans for the reservoirs for ~$9, about $25 worth of wood. What would you use for the planting grids?

If you're framing it anyway,a small parts bin, the kind with the plastic slide out drawers, could work. You would have to secure the drawers with something that wouldn't leech into the soil. Small holes drilled in the bottoms of the drawers would help with drainage since they are flat.

I would use some kind of waterproof lining to glue in behind the reservoirs and plant grid and on each side. and then caulk around the corners creating a seal. at least any leak will not get to the wall and cause damage. for the irrigation I would use a drip system and run hose behind the grid. using this system you could also set up a filter above the run off reservoir and recycle your water. maybe someone knows of a small water pump you could use to run the water back to the top reservoir.
