Jailbreak Any iPhone or iPod Touch in 45 Seconds
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:00 AM on March 22, 2008

If you've been waiting for Apple to officially open the iPhone and iPod touch for development, you may have been disappointed to find out that you won't get third-party applications until June. That means that if you've been aching for those killer third-party apps already available to folks with jailbroken iPhones or iPod touches, you've still got a few more months of waiting to go. However, by downloading and running one simple application, you could be up and running with a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch in just under a minute. Sound appealing? Here's how it works.
The Special Sauce is ZiPhone
The application that does all the heavy lifting for you is a free, open source, cross-platform application called ZiPhone, and it can do everything from quick and simple iPhone and iPod touch jailbreaks to unlocking the iPhone for unofficial carriers (i.e., not AT&T). I'm going to cover the very basic jailbreaking of the iPhone and iPod touch, but the process is the same no matter what device you're jailbreaking and what level of unlocking you want. When you're done using ZiPhone you'll be running a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch with the latest 1.1.4 firmware. Since using ZiPhone is so simple, the purpose of this post is more to demonstrate just how easy it is to jailbreak and run those third-party apps until Apple finally gives its official, official blessing in June.
Prepare Your iPhone or iPod touch for Jailbreak
First, let's talk preparation. If you're working with a fresh, up-to-date device, there's really nothing to it—you're ready to proceed to the next step. If you've already jailbroken your phone once before—especially a 1.1.3 iPhone jailbreak using one of the older methods—then you should restore your iPhone or iPod touch to the latest factory firmware (1.1.4) before continuing. When you restore, tell iTunes that want to set up the restored iPhone as a new phone rather than restoring the settings from the previously jailbroken phone. (I can't speak for the iPod touch on this front, but the first time I used ZiPhone on my previously jailbroken iPhone without taking this step, the jailbreak resulted in some bugs.) Now that you're working with a fresh device, it's time to move on to the easy part: jailbreaking.
Jailbreak Your iPhone or iPod touch in Under a Minute
Now head to the ZiPhone blog and click through on the "Click here to Download ZiPhone" link to grab the latest Windows or Mac version.![]()
Once you download ZiPhone, you're ready to go. When you run the application, you'll see a window like the one of the two images to the left. (The first one is the Windows version, the second is the Mac version. Click the image for a larger view.)
The simple jailbreaks (that is, the ones that don't unlock your iPhone for other cell phone carriers) are pointed out in the screenshot.
Quit iTunes. (This may not be strictly necessary, but it's a good practice.) Choose the option that applies to you: iPod touch jailbreak or iPhone jailbreak. ZiPhone will cycle your device into recovery mode, perform the jailbreak, and in 45 seconds your iPhone or iPod touch will be officially and completely jailbroken.
Now you can go through iTunes, set up, and sync the device just as you would if it were fresh out of the box. (Just remember not to restore your old settings if you were using a 1.1.3 jailbroken iPhone.) When you head to your home screen for the first time, you'll notice two new icons: the Installer.app icon—which is the application that allows you to install the best iPhone apps currently available—and a web clip icon that will take you to the ZiPhone homepage (which you can remove if you don't want it).
Should I Jailbreak with ZiPhone if I've Already Jailbroken?
If you've already jailbroken your iPhone or iPod touch, there's no hugely compelling reason to do it again with ZiPhone. However, I had been using a 1.1.3 jailbreak on my iPhone prior to jailbreaking with ZiPhone, and the ZiPhone jailbreak did fix the common Google Maps faux-GPS problem. Additionally, it's always good to run the latest firmware if and when you can, jailbroken or not. That's all there is to it. Simple, quick, and effective. If you've been dying to run more apps on your iPhone or iPod but the long wait until June is more than you can stomach, jailbreaking your device is easier than ever with ZiPhone. (Okay, maybe not quite as easy as the one-click jailbreak for 1.1.1, but still really easy).
If you're rocking a ZiPhone jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch or a device you jailbroke using another method, let's hear more about your experience in the comments.
Adam Pash is a senior editor for Lifehacker who's not sure he'll stop jailbreaking his iPhone or iPod even after Apple opens it up, and who likes the iPhone so much he wrote an iPhone book. His special feature Hack Attack appears weekly on Lifehacker AU.

last time i used ziphone it melted my 16gb touch back to a command prompt hard fux0r screen.
from the sounds of the posts alot of people are getting screwed tryin to "jailbreak"- which i find quite a wanky term anyway, isn't it just network/ manufacture unlocking the device?
anyway point is, can somebody bonafide please do an easy walk through ?

@holymogwai: Why?
The iPhone has WiFi, so all features are available anywhere you have an access point accessible. I have an iPhone with no data plan. Personally, I use it so I'm not carrying 2 devices (a phone and an ipod), plus the interface is the cleanest I've ever seen on a phone. All the smartphone functions work sans data plan.
I have a "decent" camera for quick snapshots, an ipod, a phone, full internet wherever there is an access point (so maps, youtube, weather, stocks, e-mail), synchronization to my desktop, and since mine is jailbroken - a level, a flashlight, and an NES emulator, just for the hell of it.
Sure doesn't sound very "useless" to me.

A friend of mine made me aware of this just yesterday and I jailbroke my 16gb iPod Touch 1.1.4 (with software update) on Windows XP in under a minute without the slightest hassle. I have no prior experience with "jailbreaking" although I've read a lot of guides, so I can safely assume this is the easiest way ever.

...Of course, there's little reason to believe those "killer third party apps." will even be available in June. Or by December, for that matter.
With all the restrictions Apple is placing on development, people don't have much impetus to keep from jailbreaking...even after the release of 2.0.

I'm sure this is out there, somewhere, but is there an easy way to hook a jailbroken phone up to my carrier, Centennial Wireless? I'd love to keep them instead of AT&T, and I'm nervous that - when I do get the iPhone - I won't be able to use it on Centennial's network.
If it does work, then I'd love to try this out...

I jailbroke 4 1.1.2 iPhones, and have successfully upgraded mine to 1.1.3 and unlocked it as well. I was pretty well informed about all the methods and so on uptill the newest 1.1.4 update. The question is, I've got gobs of 3rd party apps installed, I imagine, I will have to reinstall ALL of them again? (I know it was fun the first time...and the second time...by the third time (after doing something horibly wrong) it stopped being fun, scrolling through hundreds of apps and trying to remember which ones were cool, useful, or just a waste of time, and installing them one by one, then scrolling all the way back down the list to get the next one that starts with letter p...
No way to get around this, is there??

I've been running my jailbroken iPhone via Zibri's ZiPhone for the last 3 months. It's been working great! If you haven't done it yet, don't worry, it won't brick your phone. Just do it, you know you want to...

@lyndwode: I would think that, for most apps, all you would have to do is copy the .app folder out of /Applications via sftp. Do your restore to 1.1.4. Jailbreak via ZiPhone. Re-install BSD Subsystem and SSH from Installer, and then copy the .app folders back into /Applications. Make sure permissions are set to 0755 on all the files that you copy back in. Don't copy back in any that are already there, as those are the official ones from Apple. there are probably some settings for some apps in /var/root/Library, too.
Personally, I have a jailbroken 16GB 1.1.3 that I might do the ZiPhone upgrade to get 1.1.4 firmware. I'm hesitant, though, because it works very well right now, and I'd hate to fix something that isn't broken.

@dognose: Like I said in the post, if you had jailbroken your iPhone with a previous firmware version, you should upgrade and restore to a fresh 1.1.4 firmware through iTunes before jailbreaking with ZiPhone.

@mmrulez: The iPhone is a GSM device. Sprint uses CDMA; it won't work on the Sprint network. In the US, AT&T, T-Mobile, and smaller regional carriers are your only option for cell service.
Note for 16GB & 32GB iPhone/Touch owners: zibri appears to have corrected an issue he originally had with the larger capacity models. The latest release of Ziphone was built against his 32GB iPod Touch. Should work with all models now.
...that being said, I'm still sitting on the fence. I've stayed "legit" so far. I just bought the January update for my 16GB Touch, reluctantly so, and I'm looking forward to the App Store this Summer.
Do any Jailbreakers have some favorite/killer apps to suggest? Something that might lure fencesitters, like myself, over to the dark side?

@Miranda Kali: Given what the developers were able to show with just two weeks of work at the SDK event, I'm pretty sure that they'll be plenty of applications available.
As to the "restrictions", once you understand that an iPhone isn't a dual core Mac Air with 2GB of RAM, they're pretty reasonable.

I'm leaning toward doing this today - one question which I haven't seen covered yet:
Does jailbreaking my iPhone require a certain (previous) version of iTunes be installed on my windoze laptop? Or will this process work with the latest iTunes???
If it does require a previous version, what is it and where can I find it? Thanks!

sam - i just made the leap and jailbroke my iphone (because this process made a previously daunting task seem easy) and the first app i added was the contacts one (allows contacts to be on the home screen vs. buried inside the phone app). this alone is a nice convenience.

Thanks for all your views and experience shared will all. I was planing to purchase a new iPhone and know about this utility by which you can knock the phone (This is what i know). I still have doubt in my mind even though few people confirmed above, But can some please confirm/comment on the below:
If i have a new iPhone and i use this utility, After the break, i can use the phone to either T-Mobile or AT&T, Right? Means i don't have to do any thing extra. I am currently a AT&T subscriber, but just because activating the phone with AT&T start my contract with them again for 2 years, i don't want to do it and want to use this utility so i can use it with AT&T.
Can some one confirm if it would work in my case? I will get my iPhone by this week.. Please some one confirm..

Over on Hackint0sh it is being suggested people use iPlus instead of Ziphone to jailbreak/unlock/activate their iPhones. The main reason thrown around is that it is safer. I haven't done it yet, but people may want to head over and read through some of the threads.

One quick question. Most of the time on every website it says make sure your iPhone is on 1.1.4 firmware. But my question is when you purchased your new iPhone, how can some one tell by just looking at the box that if its a 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 firmware. Also is the Apple store person can tell the customer what would be the firmware on the purchased iPhone?
I mean if the requirement for this utility is to have your iPhone be on 1.1.4, then it would be important to make sure if it really is. Can some one explain or if i am missing some thing here..?

Your firmware version is shown when you hook up your phone to your computer and start iTunes. 1.1.4 is the latest version and even if your new phone doesn't have it, it'll prompt you to upgrade when you activate it.
For those of you that had trouble getting a cell signal after using ziphone, just restore and try it again. That's all I did.

Wow. I am impressed. I have literally tried this dozens of times before and now it finally works on my unbroken originally 1.1.3 16GB Touch. For those of you who haven't been able to get it to work, This is scary, but mostly painless. One thing that should probably be clarified is that if gets stuck on the Spamming AT part, you have to stop the process, restore the ipod (don't bother resyncing), click fix nvram, then try to jailbreak again.

@bdawg923: The current version worked just fine for me. Yes, it will delete everything off of the ipod, but that's what iTunes is for. Hell, after I jailbroke it, itunes asked me if I wanted to restore from the latest backup date (a few hours earlier) or if I wanted to set it up as a new ipod.

In other words, I have like 1000 songs on my touch, but like 2000 on my PC. I don't want all 2000 on my touch so I always sync manually. So is it possible to copy the 'playlist' of all the songs currently on my iPod into a new iTunes playlist so I can just sync that one playlist post-jailbreak?

This was my first jailbreak, so I can't guarantee the same results, but I didn't do anything different then instructed. Before this I was running 1.1.2, then I upgraded via iTunes to 1.1.4, then used ZiPhone to jailbreak and all runs well. I am noticing that there are a lot of third-party apps that don't run on the 1.1.4 firmware yet, which is dissapointing, so I may backtrack and try the 1.1.2 jailbreak. Good luck!

I jailbroke my Touch with ZiPhone 2.5c and it worked great. One caveat - If you do use ZiPhone you may notice that if you're using a program like iPhoneBrowser that your whole iPod directory isn't able to be viewed. Apparently this is a consequence of using ZiPhone.
Also, if you don't have wifi (like me) a useful program for you might be Gopher . What it's supposed to do is replace the functionality of the installer.app, but on you PC. So, you run Gopher and it connects up to all those source sites like installer.app does on the iPod but it does it on your PC. You choose the apps you'd like to install from Gopher, then it transfers them over to your iPod.
Only thing is it doesn't seem to work for me: probably a combination of my having 1.1.4 (it's only been tested up to 1.1.3) and having jailbroken with Ziphone and not having the entire iPod directory available to me.
It may work for you though.

@LastVigilante: Erk. Yeah... who doesn't read directions? Me! I just went back and re-read the paragraph that said "you should restore your iPhone or iPod touch to the latest factory firmware (1.1.4) before continuing. When you restore, tell iTunes that want to set up the restored iPhone as a new phone" Well, I only updated to 1.1.4, and I didn't restore. This could explain some problems I've been having installing apps or having non-functioning apps. So, upon further review: Yes, restoring your iPod will erase all your files and settings, and never to listen to anything I say in the future.
LastVigilante
bdawg923
Posted 1:03 AM 24/3/08
@LastVigilante: Yeah, in the article it says "First, let's talk preparation. If you're working with a fresh, up-to-date device, there's really nothing to it-you're ready to proceed to the next step. If you've already jailbroken your phone once before-especially a 1.1.3 iPhone jailbreak using one of the older methods-then you should restore your iPhone or iPod touch to the latest factory firmware (1.1.4) before continuing. When you restore, tell iTunes that want to set up the restored iPhone as a new phone rather than restoring the settings from the previously jailbroken phone."
So if I haven't jailbroken before, and my firmware is already 1.1.4, then I don't need to restore. I know that restoring deletes everything off the iPod but since I don't do the restore, then ZiPhone probably won't delete everything after jailbreak like you said in your other comment. Right?

Before you do that, maybe Adam Pash can respond in the comments to clear up any confusion?
bdawg923
LastVigilante
Posted 4:00 AM 24/3/08
@bdawg923: That is the exact area where I am confused as well, so you may wish to seek the advice of a more experienced jailbreaker. You see, I never jailbreaked before either, so I upgraded to 1.1.4 (but didn't restore, so all my files were intact) and then I ran ZiPhone, which, yes, jailbreaked my iPod Touch and left all my files untouched.
However, I am noticing issues with installing and running third-party apps that otherwise should run. For instance, the ToDo app installs fine, but when I go to launch it my screen goes white, then bounces me back to the home screen. Other apps fail at install, giving me an error "This package requires firmware 1.1.x". This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I didn't full restore before jailbreaking.
When Adam Pash instructs to start with "a fresh, up-to-date device," I think by fresh he means empty, straight out of the box, no files or settings mucked with. I'm going to try doing that today, (its going to suck to lose my contacts, bookmarks & calendar entries) but I'll let you know the results. *fingers crossed*

Refresh the source and find the item as "1.1.4 applications" and install it. You will get every thing (all the 5 additional applications + icon arrangement feature)

Confirmed - 1.1.4 jailbroken, useable, but as stated, full directory is not accessible. Three thousand cheers to the team that snapped out this bit of code.

Help! I tried it on my ipod touch and now I am stuck at the white text on the black screen. I tried the FIX NVRAM and the test now is hung at IOIpodUSBDevice:startStack can't start! Need configuration
What now? I tried to restart itunes but it doesn't detect the touch.

I chose to stay at 1.1.2 because it just seemed to be the most stable version when it comes to compatibility with other applications from the installer. I just love summerboard.

If you're running 1.1.4 (non-jailbroken), do you still need to restore in iTunes? Do have to get rid of the Mail, Maps, Stocks, etc. before you can run this ZiPhone file?

Can you get a visual list of voicemail messages on a jailbroken iPhone with T-Mobile? That's the feature that I really want but I don't want to switch to AT&T.

@mkstool: OhmygodIthinkIjustwetmyself! Awesome, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Though, for the information of others, the proper item to look for is "iPhone 1.1.4 Apps." Now I'm wishing I did this a long time ago. Eeee! Wiggly icons!
@bdawg923: I never got around to trying the full restore, but since then there was an Installer.app update, and the wisdom of mkstool was bestowed upon me, so now everything is exactly where I want it. Like I said, I'm on a Windows machine and jailbroke without losing any data on my 8gb iPod, so I hope you have the same luck. rabiddachshund seems to be having issues, so I suppose YMMV.

I was interested in ZiPhone when it originally came out but, at the time, it was only available for Leopard (isn't it still?) so I checked out iNdependence for Mac. [code.google.com]
it was super easy to perform all the above functions and more!

@rabiddachshund: Your Mileage May Vary. Acronyms, FTW! Regarding your issues, I've seen things around the 'net regarding ZiPhone having trouble jailbreaking 16GB iPods and iPhones something to do with a BSD root error, which you may wish to look into.

oh, duh. I saw some sort of BSD subsystem fix in the tweaks section that I vaguely remember being told to install by some outdated guide. I'm on vacation atm so I just restored it back to factory. I'll try again when I get home.

@LastVigilante: Thanks! I'll do the jailbreak soon then. If everything gets deleted, then I still have a backup on my PC.

This worked amazingly well for my 8gb ipod touch. I didn't need to restore it or anything. I didn't lose anything either. The only problem is that certain apps don't work on 1.1.4. But other than that, I can't complain.

@VinnyDakid: Do you mean the apps that were already on the iPod (like YouTube) or apps that you got from installer?
I have a few more questions: When Apple releases the next update (with the App Store), what should I do to upgrade? Assuming Zibri releases a new version of ZiPhone, will I have to just run that (based on how these past releases and updates have gone like from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 and 1.1.3 to 1.1.4) or should I restore and then run the app? I'm just curious for the future.
And lastly, if there a specific order to do this in? (the plugging in of iPod, closing iTunes, clicking the iPod jailbreak button in ZiPhone)?

I jailbroke my ipod touch back with 1.1.2 using a rather complex method. I restored it for the SDK and then realized there would be no news apps. Not willing to wait, I found Ziphone and jailbroke my ipod again. With version 2.5 there were a few hiccups such as it being stuck on certain parts but someone else was able to help me. I can only assume that they fixed this with Ziphone 2.6. Anyways, for people new to jailbreaking [www.ipodtouchfans.com] is a great location for themes, apps, and help.

Thanks CHARLIE WAG for your comments - I previously had my ipod touch hacked under 1.1 and then restored to factory settings and used it for a while, decided to hack it again under .4 and couldnt figure out why i was having all the problems with the installer - adding your sources fixed everything, cheers!

@bdawg923: I mean the apps I got from installer. Oddly enough I didn't even need the fixes for the apps already on it. But after this, my entire ipod locked up. At first, one app didn't work, then once I got the fix, the whole ipod locked up. A quick restore fixed that and I will probably jailbreak it again later today.

@carol816: Use the Google, Luke
BTW it's called
BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0
Not BSC.
Use the link above to fix the error without restoring.
If you got anymore problems then just search ziphone on Ipod touch Fans Forums gold mine of fixes there.
