Productivity Webapps for the iPod Touch
Posted by Tamar Weinberg at 6:00 AM on March 16, 2008
Blogger Geekpreneur says you can use the iPod touch as a productivity tool with the right webapps, like Mobile Web Docs and Web Notes. Additionally, Lifehacker favourite Orb can free you from the 8, 16, or 32GB iPod touch hard drive; with Orb, you can stream the music and video library on your computer to the touch through your Wi-Fi connection. What are your favourite productivity tools for use on the iPod touch or iPhone? Let's hear them in the comments.

The key for most web apps is to keep it simple enough to run on the ever painful Edge network. My favorite productivity apps are these:
Favorite Shopping list: Listingly.com This app allows both my wife and I to add to the list where ever and whenever we think of an item (we both have the iPhone)
Favorite GTD: 43actions.com I am still getting used to the GTD thing but I like how intuitive it is and how quick it is even on Edge.
Favorite wiki: NONE. Sorry with all the available apps it may seem that I am being greedy, but I really want a stripped down wiki that runs quickly on the iphone. None exists to my knowledge. If anyone knows of one please tell me. I have been searching for ages

Sure wish Google would make their Docs & things available for the iPod Touch. It would be pretty sweet if they did.

I'd say [glueynotes.com] be cause it gives me the freedom to write notes on the iphone when I am on the go, and edit the same note on safari when I am home

My favorite productivity-enhancing web app for iPhone/iTouch is PimpMyNews.com. (disclosure: I'm a co-founder)
It continuously scans the web's top 1,000+ news & blog sites and converts breaking stories to audio so you can listen to them (vs. read) on your iPhone/iTouch, Mac or PC.
It lets you catch up on your favorite blogs by listening to them while you do other things like drive, work out, ride the train, etc.
iPhone/iTouch app: [www.PimpMyNews.com]
If you sign up on the full site on your Mac/PC, you can create a personalized playlist.

If only we had iPhones in Canada. I've just recently started using my cell for internet, as Rogers has finally come out with unlimited internet usage. I have a Touch so and iPhone will be nice some time in the future.

@swisshound: Try going to www.vtap.com/wiki from your iPhone, I use it on my touch and it gives you a pretty useful interface for Wikipedia. I'm not sure how well it runs on EDGE, as I've only used it on Wifi...but it's worth a shot.

I love editgrid.com, which is an online spreadsheet app that has a specific and very nice iPhone interface. A bit slow on the loading, but really full-featured for a mobile app. Allows for multiple pages in each spreadsheet also. Sadly they don't do any other types of documents (word processing, presentation, etc).

I think the Touch (and iPhone) really has the potential to become a great productivity tool, but it will stand to be seen whether or not the restriction on 3rd party apps running in the background has a negative affect.
Zoho claims that you can edit their docs (i.e. Zoho Writer) from an iPhone / Touch...see [blogs.zoho.com] or [www.izoho.com]
I've been checking out Zoho, and like how they've implemented Google's own Gears technology to enable online / offline capabilities with their apps.

[wikipedia.comoki.com] is a pretty good wikipedia webapp for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Strips down everything but the content, and formats everything to fit nicely. It even auto-hides sections of the articles and you can click on it to expand.
