Good protection but not great protection. Wetsuits do allow water to get through. The way a wetsuit works is it allows water to get through and that water warms between your skin and the neoprene. I have no experienece with dry suits, but they may work better.

Hey, I live in San Diego, where folks are selling/trading/recycling wetsuits all the time. Depends on how wetsuity your location is I guess. :)

I think you need to use a diving wetsuit, not one for surfing. Surfing wetsuits are more intricately crafted, with more panels and seams the limbs move much more than in diving.

Also, there's the problem of removing surf wax from a surfing wetsuit.

Frankly, I'm glad I spent the $30 on a neoprene Macbook sleeve rather than make my own.

Wetsuits allow water through? It's not the wetsuit allowing water through, that would be the neck hole, the arm and leg holes allowing water through. Wetsuit material is water proof (if it's in good condition).

When I get a chance, I'm going to write up an article about using an zippable binder as a laptop case. I took an old binder that I used for school, ripped the prong out and then put my laptop inside, and it worked like a charm. With some minor tweaks which I have not gotten around to, It will make a perfect traveling case for my laptop. Best of all, it fools a lot of people to because nobody thinks of stealing a binder, let alone figure out a laptop is inside.

That is not true, depending on where you live you very likely could have old wetsuits lying around, as previously mentioned by Gina who is from San Diego.

I happen to have two old wetsuits in my closet in addition to my good wetsuit that I surf regularly in. (I also live in San Diego). And I am a person who "checks" lifehacker three or four times a day.

Also, none of my old wetsuits stink. I rinse them out with water after use and hang them to dry. Old wetsuits only stick if you throw them in a wad somewhere while still wet and leave them for a long time to get mildew and mold growing on them.

All that being said, I doubt I will bother to make a laptop sleeve out of my old wetsuit. But I think this one looks nice and was a very clever idea.

I think I had 7 in the attic at last count.....
But then i live and surf in Ireland. Wetsuits all year round....
As for smell...none of mine do, probably because i don't piss in them!
It's often said surfers can be divided in those who do, and those who don't; micturate in their wetsuits.
And yes, neoprene is waterproof, but a wetsuit isn't, due to the ARM, LEG and NECK apertures.

So yeah, your new laptop case might look pretty slick, but it won't be waterproof. It's still better than no case at all, though.

I actually have two old wetsuits lying around that I could use. Also, because I know how to wash them and I have never urinated in them (urine rots Neoprene and downright stinks up a wetsuit), they smell just fine.

I prefer mr.zogg's-free neoprene, so I called around to some wet-suit makers and ordered a square yard of the sturdy stuff. Warning: you need a strong thimble and an upholstery needle to get through more than a single layer of rubbery, glue-y, stickiness. In fact, that case is one of the biggest reasons I was so sad to retire my '02 G3 iBook. :_( Or, you could buy some wetsuit shampoo to make sure you get the pee out. ... come on, you know you do it!
