HTML Trick to Add Page Numbers to Google Docs
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on March 11, 2008
The Google Operating System blog provides a few blocks of code that anyone can insert into their Google Docs word processing files to add dynamic page numbers to page headers and footers, but which show up only in the online office suite's PDF-powered printing mode. The trick involves added a chunk of code to the top or bottom of a document using the "Edit HTML" toggle at the top of the editing page. Head to GOS for the code, as well as links to ways you can further customise both code blocks.

i know it's popular to hate microsoft office and a lot of people are switching to good docs, but are you serious that you couldn't add page numbers without editing HTML code?
i'm sorry, i can't make that switch. such a basic feature.

It is not a question of switching from MSFT Office to Google Docs, these are two different things.
A Web-Based web processor will never be as efficient as software one installed on your machine, at least not today nor tomorrow but in few years, that's certain, then why would Microsoft itself jump in the bandwagon. Google are already doing a great job, do not forget that Google Docs has only been launched on September last year.
Google Docs and other word processor offer the ability when you're on the go to write a document that can easily be formated in a word document or any other format and that do not forget it directly from your browser while checking your email, that is huge. Does Word offer the ability to save a document at a PDF file, No. Was it flawless when it fist got released, hell no.
You're also forgetting something very important , This is a FREE service that you do not need to buy a license in order to use it, without forgetting which is in my opinion the most important, the ability for multiple users to collaborate on one single document. Something that Microsoft offers once you buy Sharepoint. In other words, you get what you pay for. I know that Google Docs saved me and my team during my masters when we were able from our individual homes to collaborate on multiple documents, it was awesome, not flawless but the time we saved was worth it.

If you print the document, to like PDF you can specify if you want page numbers, this hack allows you to change the formatting to like Page 4 of 10. or -4-. or whatever.
anyone know how to to be able to know where the page breaks (like where it would go from page 1 to page 2) are while still editing it online in gdocs? cuz that is the most annoying thing for me, and exporting it to PDF evertytime i want to know where i am would be tedious and annoying.

Great tip. I was wondering if there was any way to change the view in google docs to something like MS Word's "Print Layout"?

That's nice of them, but wouldn't it just be easer to add a header and footer button for those of us who don't know how to use HTML?
