Jott Beta for Blackberry Lets You Reply to Email by Voice
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on March 8, 2008
Blackberry users ony: Mobile speech-to-text service Jott has released a beta plug-in for Blackberry phones (series 8800, 8300 Curve, and 8100 Pearl only) that lets you respond to those ever-present emails with a "Reply with Jott" feature. The main advantage is that if you notice a message while driving, you can speak your reply and have it sent as an email, rather than drastically increased your chance at an accident. The program should work with most Bluetooth headsets as well, but users have noted that the program defaults to speakerphone mode upon hitting reply, although I don't have a model myself to see if that's configurable. Jott for Beta is a free download (while it's in beta, at least), and be downloaded by pointing your Blackberry to jott.com/bb. For ideas on getting more out of Jott, see how to get things done over the phone with Jott. Thanks Joshua!

Any words on how good the speech to text conversion is? I can just imagine a lot of misinterpreted emails getting sent this way.

@mr_oshodi: Sorry, no video that I saw, but at least one tipster seemed to dig it - aside from that speakerphone-by-default issue.

I use Jott daily and would not trust its transcription quality for anything that would be seen by anyone but me.
That said, it's great for notes like "Remember to buy some milk." Though it will probably arrive as "Remember to bite some milf."

Just signed up for it and it works really well. I tested the word supercalifragilistic expialidocious and it translated exactly (I cut/pasted the translated version above). That's pretty cool. Don't like that it defaults to the speaker phone though.

I think this is cool, but it's funny how they say this will make if safer for people to respond to emails because they will be able to keep their eyes on the road while driving. Well, how do you read the email in the first place? Does Jott read the email too? For me, reading the email is more dangerous than the reply. I can do that with my eyes closed (not while driving of course).

I've learned to improve my Jott accuracy. You can "spell" things for Jott... so you can say... Remember r e m e m b e r THEN it only spells "remember" Jott know when you are spelling things out for it. It spelling is key (like when returning an e-mail), I would spell things out more.

This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but the transcription is done (or verified?) by a host of workers in India. This article (yes, a year old) indicates that '100% of Jotts go through a human being'. ([www.technologyreview.com] , pg 2) It may have changed since then, but it's good to know what's behind the curtain.
