Get More Work Space with Writing Room 4 Google Documents
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on March 6, 2008
Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Writing Room 4 Google Documents Greasemonkey script makes it possible to toggle and hide the logo and whitespace above the functional toolbar on a writing and editing page in Google Documents. Those with smaller screens and lesser resolutions will appreciate the extra writing space this little script grants them, but it could help anyone looking for a more distraction-free screen—especially combined with Firefox's full-screen mode. The toolbar toggle doesn't work with spreadsheets or slideshow editing, but an intrepid JavaScript hacker can probably fix that in a few minutes. Writing Room 4 Google Documents is a free download, requires Firefox with Greasemonkey (or Safari with Greasekit) to use.

I don't use Greasemonkey scripts but this enough for me to try it.
@Pascal Herbert: I second that.

Kevin,
Please let us know when it's hacked for spreadsheets - I have tons of them, and could really use the extra space...

Hey there!
I'm the author of the script.
I tried to hack it for spreadsheets, but it's a little more tricky.
Clicking on a cell would result in selecting a different cell, higher in the screen.
I have a couple of ideas, I'll look into it when I get some time.
P.S.
Thanks Kevin!

@Michael Sacchi: I saw issues with that on a computer that had a stock installation of Firefox with no add-ons or anything modifying GSpreadsheets. I think Google needs to clean up the code a bit and make it behave more consistently at lower resolutions (the computer was at a school and locked to [grr] 800x600 resolution).
@Pascal Herbert, SA: +1 for a Better GDocs extension. I actually came here from the feed to suggest it myself.
Gina, how about a Better Everything extension that includes all the other Better X_______ extensions' scripts? It would be useful for people like me who install every extension in the Better series anyway because we use all the services.

Until Gina whips up an official one, here's an unofficial extension:
[download.yousendit.com]
(8k .XPI download. download and use Firefox to "open the file")
if you don't want to install strange code, change the extension of the greasemonkey script to a .txt, open it, copy it all, and paste it here to make your own firefox extension:

While you're at it, you might as well include my userscript ([userscripts.org]) which adds the possibility to add LaTeX expressions to Google Docs.

@DT NICE. I think you'll love the Eee. It's so customizable, so if you like Linux and tweaking, you'll be in hog heaven. And quite honestly it's the gadget purchase that really helped my productivity the most. Even more than my Palm T|X...which I really like.
