Switch Auto-Start Apps On Using Caps Lock with Capster
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on March 5, 2008
Windows only: Free utility Capster is an amazingly small (5K!) program that turns your Caps Lock key into a kind of startup mode switch. Choose a few programs that you sometimes would like to have started at Windows login, and Capster will place them in your Startup folder but launch them only if you hit Caps Lock before you arrive at your desktop. The obvious benefit is to folks who use their systems in two different modes—like wanting to have your email, calendar, and productivity apps opened when you're working, but not when you're doing some weekend Wikipedia wandering. Capster is a free download for Windows systems only.

Seems like it could be handy for some but a pain for others that fat-finger the caps lock key when aiming for the shift key. :)

The caps lock key should be removed from keyboards it's only use is to allow people to type in angry mode without having to hold down the shift key.

I'd rather map functions to the capslock itself.... But the key is so easily triggered launching several apps accidentally can be painful (my keyboard has it spaced away to avoid accidents thankfully). I love enso and I prefer it take over the key..

RTFA! The app doesn't turn your capslock key into a "launch a bunch of apps" key, it just uses the state of the capslock key to determine if it WILL LAUNCH A BUNCH OF APPS apps DURING START UP! (see what I did there?)

I think this tool could be really helpful. I could imagine putting all of my startup apps into Capster so that when I'm rebooting multiple times due to troubleshooting or installing updates or something, I can disable all the startup apps that double my login time.

I did RTFA, but apparently I MSOTFW (missed some of the freakin words). No need to be rude, it happens.

Overall, this is a pretty neat idea--I'll implement it in my .ahk startup script.

@Woodsyx: Common convention in building plans calls for all-caps notes.
