Quiet Down Your DVD Drive with Nero DriveSpeed
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on March 4, 2008
Windows only: Freeware application Nero DriveSpeed slows down the read speed of your CD or DVD drive so you don't have to endure the loud jet-engine whirring of your drive every time you want to listen to a CD or watch a DVD on your computer. Obviously there are plenty of times when the 48x read speed of your drive comes in handy—particularly when you are transferring data from an optical disc—but if you're just listening to a CD, for example, your drive really doesn't need to spin up to top speed. After installation, DriveSpeed can prompt you whenever you insert a disk and you can choose whether to run in Fast or Silent mode. Nero DriveSpeed is freeware, Windows only.

This is exactly what I need. I was actually going to take my Vaio back to Sony, thinking there was something wrong (my pevious laptop had a slow and relatively silent CD-ROM drive). This may well sort it out. Thanks Adam and One Tip a Day!

I'm assuming this is something that sticks in the background as a running process?

How about setting the CD-ROM speed to "Silent" in the Control Panel -> Power Options dialog box's "Advanced Settings" tab?

Will spinning at the slower speed also save battery life? [Sorry in advance if I should just RTFA - I'm running out the door and afraid I'll forget.]

@myownlife: I suspect that's an OEM option because it's not a feature I've seen standard in Windows. For example, Toshiba offers their own silent mode app in the taskbar.

As long as its freeware, use it, but be wary of Nero (Ahead Software AG) when giving them money. I had a HW incompatibility with the Nero SW with a specific drive used in a laptop and tried to return the SW within 48 hours and they tried to renege on the deal. Would not refund my money.
Long story short, I won in small claims court.

I'd love to see a LH poll showing what formats people listen to music on! At this stage I'm almost purely MP3! Not too bothered with noise from a DVD/CD drive.

VLC Media player stops playing DVDs on my vostro 1400 when DriveSpeed is running, either fast or silent mode. As soon as I exit DriveSpeed, VLC works again.
XP Pro w/ VLC 0.8.6e.
