Get Podcasts by Email for Automatic Delivery

iTunes, Amarok, or any podcast aggregator of your choice—they do a great job of fetching and organising your favorite periodic mp3s, but what if you just have one or two shows you occasionally listen to? The Geeks are Sexy blog recommends using an Rss-to-email service to have your podcasts sent directly to your email. For podcasts that regularly turn out smaller mp3 files, it's a feasible solution, and it gets you the shows immediately, rather than relying on your memory or an always-open pod-catcher to check for them. Better still, users of Gmail and other web-based email can often play the files directly from the message with built-in players. For another podcast alternative, try using Netvibes as your aggregator.

I am not sure if this is useful.

Sounds like a great idea, but I won't use it.

assuming that most ppl listen to podcasts on their ipod, this seems to add a few steps in the process:
opening email -> downloading to hardrive -> importing into itunes ->syncing
Vs.
subscribing to podcast in itunes -> having it download and sync automatically

assuming that most ppl listen to podcasts on their ipods, this would seem to add a few unnecessary steps to the whole process (ie, downloading from email, saving to computer, importing into itunes, syncing. VS. subscribing to the podcast in itunes for automatic delivery and syncing).. but that's just my take.

I didn't even know about Gmail's built-in audio player. I might email myself some of my music and use it as a portable computer mp3 player so I can free up space on my hard drive. If done correctly with filters, it could be very easy to organize and find music on there.

Feedburner has allowed this for some time.
Unfortunately, hardly anybody promotes this option because it's buried deep within Feedburner's configuration options.
In many ways, email is a better delivery mechanism for notification of podcasts (particularly infrequent ones) than RSS feeds. It's more in-your-face. You are forced to deal with it. And a heck of a lot more people understand email than they do RSS feeds.

Hmmm, I wonder if this will work with the iPhone's Mail app? This would be a great way to get new podcast episodes while traveling (unable to sync the iPhone to iTunes).

@rickhuizinga: I was thinking the same thing. In my mind, this + Gmail IMAP + iPhone/iPod Touch mail.app should = wireless podcast happiness!

Personally I use a combination of Juice + File Mover + RSS Feed (to tell me when something new is available) + USB Detect & Launch (to copy the podcast onto whatever removable drive/player I insert into the USB port).
If you're interested, I documented all the process and tools I use here:

How do I get a media player in Gmail? I get e-mail updates of my podcast, but there isn't a media player option.
