DIY iPod Nano Video Enlarger
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on March 1, 2008
Okay, so we just highlighted how to build your own iPod projector, but consider this the power-of-optics weekend, because another iPod nano owner frustrated with the small-screen viewing experience has transformed a 35mm slide viewer to a full-fledged nano TV, complete with speakers. The result is called the Nanoscope, and it's awesome.

Why go through the trouble on encoding upside down? Won't it be more efficient to simply flip the player over?

@smitty1123: Actually it's nothing like that at all....EPIC FAIL

So, it's basically this with speakers, an enclosure and for an iPod:
Gameboy magnifier

I'd be too lazy to re-encode all my videos upside down. But I guess for new videos it wouldn't be that bad.
very cool hack though, it even has that "retro" feel.

It's gonna be fun to watch the prices of these slide viewers go up on ebay.

@metalhaze: I was referring to functionality, not form. That said, it's an incredibly elegant mod.

Very cool but as @shreveyboy said having to encode your video upside is troublesome... not to mention a pain... love the retro...

Hell, I like it. Sure encoding upside down video is a drag, but its a really cool concept. Gonna try something similar for the Zune i think.

Not to mention that you would have to watch it straight on. If you were sitting to either side, or stood up, you would crop your 5" screen.

And this is better how exactly?
Trade one crappy way to way a movie for another crappy way to watch a movie.
Boo.

This is what happens if you have too much time on your hands.

Moral of the story: Don't buy an iPod nano if you have horrible eyesight?
Don't they exist so you can have an mp3 player that takes up a minimum of space? Doesn't this box completely destroy that?
Logistics aside, I have to admit that this is a ghetto fabulous solution to a poor purchase decision.

The amusement factor is high, but it's useless isn't it really? Encoding all your stuff arse about face just for the pleasure of watching it a bit bigger. Why not just watch it on the screen you're encoding on?! Are you going to carry that brown lump of plastic around with you wherever you go as-well? I doubt it. Yes, it's novel but about as much use as a chocolate teapot. It is indeed what happens when you truly have not much else going on in your life.

haha it does look ghetto as! I'm surprised Apple didn't put in a video out so that companies can see digital-screen docks.

I tried using a magnifier for a Sega Game Gear when I was a kid. Yes, it made the image larger but it also made the image look funky and pixelated, and required you to look directly from the front. I quit using it after a few weeks.
This reminds me of the "digital zoom" on cameras. Perhaps sometimes useful, but generally just a trade off between image size and quality.

Interesting but isn't this awesomely ironical?! What's the point in possesing a device so small(Nano) that you need an enlarger?! First we invented nano, then we make an enlarger!!! Ain't that shiny?!
