Clean Out Old Startup Entries with MSConfig Cleanup
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:40 AM on March 1, 2008
Windows only: MSConfig Cleanup does one thing that you might only need once, but it does it well. When you run "msconfig," also known as Windows' System Configuration tool, or a number of other optimising programs, you have the option of disabling startup items to free up memory at boot time. Those items remain, unchecked, in the menu, however—unless MSConfig Cleanup deletes their entries, giving you a clear view of what is and isn't running on your system, and making it easier to pare down your system load without having to double-back on yourself. MSConfig Cleanup is a free download for Windows systems only.

CCleaner does this too, very well. Remove the unwanted startup entries, then do a registry backup and clean, take seconds. [CCleaner.com]

Or you can get the Sysinternals Suite of great tools and get Autoruns, which is much more powerful but no harder to use.

Oh and incidentally there are fantastic replacements for the task manager, tools to see what is going on on the network and many other great tools.

Second Autoruns--it can be as simple or complex as you need it to be. Also allows you to delete if you like as well.

Regcleaner is also a fantastic program. I used it right up to the day I switched to mac -a longer lasting solution, in the end... :).

As cr0ft mentioned, Autoruns is far superior.
You can download all of the Sysinternals utilities as the Sysinternals Suite.

I prefer "Startup Control Panel" from [mlin.net]
It is very simple and intuitive.

With MS Configuration we can have a option of removing unwanted files and clean up the unwanted memory space taken by the system.

is this even necessary? i kind of like the idea of keeping track of which startup processes i manually stopped just in case some app decides not to work and/or if there's more i need to do (like checking the "services" dialog) to stop a rogue process.
