Turn PDFs into Printable Booklets with BookletCreator
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:30 AM on February 29, 2008
Want to read a printed copy of a PDF that's portable and staple-free? BookletCreator is a free PDF conversion webapp that creates documents that can be printed and folded into an easy-to-read booklet. Assuming your PDF is oriented to "portrait" layout and is less than eight pages, you can get what appear to be pretty decent-looking booklets from your document. Got more than eight pages? Tell BookletCreator to split the file into so many pages per booklet, and spread your words and images across multiple copies. BookletCreator is free to use and doesn't require a sign-up.

Here's another link that makeuseof had recently called Poketmod. I started using it for my to-do and grocery lists, it works great and I enjoyed the interface.

I tried the link, selected a 6 page pdf to test it with, practically instantly the site was downloading a completed file! But, the file did not have the .pdf extension, I renamed the file and it looked great.
Nice tool for people not having access to a networked printer/copier that has built in booklet functions.
Is there a similar offline version?

Version 8 of the free Adobe Reader has built-in booklet printing capabilities -- it works on any installed printer, and you can print any arbitrary page range from a large PDF -- and it will properly collate it for you.
I've used it to print 22-page booklets on 7 sheets of paper, and they turn out great. Finish them off with a long-reach stapler (Stanley/Bostitch makes a good inexpensive one), and you've got yourself a handy-dandy reference booklet taken from your favorite PDFs.

And, PocketMod has the PDF to PockeMod standalone program as well, which I've been using for quite awhile (Car Maintenance log, a small book of poetry to memorize, greetign cards, etc).
I love the versatility of more than 8 pages for this program though - thanks for the article!

@cipheroid: yes, Adobe Reader does have the feature. You can get to it in the Print dialog.
