Open Office 2007 Documents in OpenOffice with OpenXML Translator
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:00 PM on February 26, 2008
Linux only: Expand OpenOffice.org's document opening, saving, and conversion powers to Office 2007 documents with the OpenXML Translator, a free plug-in intended for Ubuntu systems (although other Debian-based systems might be able to use it as well). Grab a package for your 32- or 64-bit system, install it (hitting the via link if you need help with that) and OpenOffice will be able to read and save files to the .docx format. Conversion from Microsoft Office-authored files remains hit-and-miss, but it's a nice step forward for the free and open-source office suite. The OpenXML translator is a free download for Linux systems only.

Is there a Windows method for doing this yet? This is all that's really standing in my way of a full fledged migration.

I totally misread the title at first. I thought when they said "Open Office 2007", they were talking about some weird version of OpenOffice.org....

For those using any Linux can use OdfConverter via the command line or in Fedora or Mandriva's OpenOffice.org or use OxygenOffice (a special edition of OpenOffice.og) to open Office Open XML files. Alternatively, there's www.zamzar.com and docx2rtf (which works via Wine). Windows users of OpenOffice.org can use Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for free. Whichever way you choose, install the Office 2007 fonts for maximum compatability.

Actually, I am able to do this on one of my Windows XP computers that does not have Office 2007 installed. I use the Novell version of OpenOffice. There is a plug in coverter that only works with the Novell version of OpenOffice. It coverts Office 2007 formats to OpenOffice on my Windows Xp computer.
One draw back is that the Novell version is "out of print " as it were and is hard to find on the internet. It is also not the latest version of OpenOffice.

Office 2007 file support would be a welcome feature to add to all of the OpenOffice versions, not just as an add-in to the Linux versions. If anyone knows a good option for the Windows version of OpenOffice, it would be welcome.

I don't know about all of you ... but we're telling our clients to re-email their attachments as good old .doc files
Thusly, we haven't had any conversion issues :P
We actually have a few versions of Office 2007 in our office, but we made it policy not to save to the new Office formats, after the formats made some of our clients crazy and made it harder to collaborate within the company.
Our president actually hates the new version of Office so much that he's having us start migrating to OpenOffice (slowly, see how it effects employees' workflow)
Glad to see that there are abunchof tools for dealing with these new annoying formats! I can add these to the scripts I have to run when I get RTF emails from Outlook.
God bless Microsoft and their policies!

So use OxygenOffice which is a modified version of OpenOffice.org similar to the Novell OpenOffice.org, but OxygenOffice stays up to date, is easy to find, and includes other goodies.
