I have had GC for a while. It is missing a few features that would make it useful to me but I did email them and they said they would bounce around the ideas and try to add them in a later release.

I have tried GrandCentral out for a few weeks, and I really love the idea. But before I really start giving out a new number, I have one Big problem that I would like to get straightened out first:
I will be moving across the pond to the UK in 3-4 months, but it doesn't look like GrandCentral has expanded that far yet (if ever). The one workaround I have thought about is using a Gizmo number (similar to Skype) to let people contact me overseas, but that will only work when I'm near my computer. Does anyone know how to use GrandCentral internationally, or know for sure that it isn't possible? Cheers.

I've had a few occasions where calls appeared in the online call log, but never rang a phone and also where a guy in Kansas kept getting calls showing my GC number on his caller ID that I had never made.

@fuzzycuffs: There actually is a cradle like device that you can use to not only put it in like her current land line, but if she gets a good deal on the cell phone you can use it instead of a home line. It's called cellsocket. You attach it to your home phone lines, and it will be a bridge between your cell phone and home lines, so your home phone rings when your cell phone rings, and when you dial out you dial out of your cell phone. No more need for your landline provider. You disconnect it and use cellsocket instead with your wireless provider for your home lines. You should be able to google info about it pretty easily by the product name cellsocket.

I've been using GrandCentral for a few months now.
I actually did it so my mom, who's on a fixed income, doesn't have to spend long distance fees to call me on my cellphone. I set up a number that is local to her so that she can call the local number and it rings my phone.
People have suggested getting her a cellphone, which I'm entirely in agreement with, but she's been pretty against the idea for a lot of reasons. Cellphones in America really aren't geared towards the elderly. No big buttons, aside from the Firefly phone. Also, she's not too keep on having to remember to charge it. If it came with a little cradle that she should just put it in like her current land line, then I'd really consider it.
But for the time being, the GrandCentral idea at least saves her money.

I don't know why anyone would feel "stymied by their move to a closed, invite-only beta following Google's acquisition of the service" since all you have to do is sign up (the "reserve a number" button on their website) and you'll get in a day or two later.
That's how I joined a couple of months ago. I sent out some invites and one person misplaced his, so he put himself on the waiting list a week ago and got a number the next day.

I have been using GrandCentral for a few months. It works pretty well, except that sometimes there is a delay for calls that come through my cell phone (on T-Mobile). I haven't noticed any problems on calls on my landlines. Otherwise, it's great. It was especially nice when my wife and I had to switch cell phones while we were on a trip -- I just updated my GC account to ring her cell phone instead of mine!

I'd love to try it. As luck would have it, NH is one of only two states in which they seem to have no numbers available. My second choice, Maine (just a couple minutes away)is the only other. If it's going to be my new, universal number that I give out to everyone, it'd really be nice to have an area code in my home state... Wonder what they have against us?

I've been using GrandCentral for about 6 months now, and I love it. It's great being able to have one number that I can give out to everyone, but control who gets to actually reach me and on what phones. And I like the fact that I can get my voice mail messages from my computer anywhere in the world.
They still have a few minor glitches to work out, such as the fact that people whose names are in your address book are still announced as "unknown caller" when you call in for messages (though they're correctly identified online), and there's no timestamp (or date) on messages that you call in for (again, online the info is correct). But these are minor issues that I assume they'll resolve. Overall it's a great service, and it's totally changed the way I deal with telephone communication.

GC is a great service. I can't wait for them to add in Canadian area codes. This is long overdue.
I thought Canada was the US test market? Why not beta test on a population of 30 million before rolling it out to 350 million people.
Bah! The moral of the story is I want my local number.

Been loving grandcentral for about 3 or 4 months now, it even made 'coolsite of the week' on my show a few weeks/month back.
It's actually my wife with the #, but we have my cell in there too - the way we use it is she gives the GC # to everyone she wants to contact her, and any 'emergency' people (school teachers of the kids, doctors, an aunt who was pregnant and might need help any moment) we have it ring all of our phones kind of like a customer service line hunt group - whoever picks it up first handles the problem!

my only problem with grand central is that some people (particularly people attempting to delivery my tv) are too stupid to comprehend the "please state your name" part. once they hear a voice they just start yammering. the name portion was the middle of a sentence and they never lasted until the voicemail portion because they thought i hung up on them. my sister has no problem with it but i've had lots of problem with stupid people not comprehending the basic function.
in terms of the service itself, its great and i've had no problems using it. i signed up when i read the techcrunch story that google had purchased it and got in on the last day before they closed it up.
really wished you could program extensions so i could use it with my work # but thats a minor problem and something most people wont think about.

Just wanted to submit my GrandCentral lifehack (though it's probably been added before).
Have the caller id of calls forwarded be your GrandCentral number (you still get call presentation anyway) and then put your GrandCentral number on your friends and family list of your cell phone. Result: No air time charges on your cell for incoming calls.
It's very cool, though I am waiting for someone to charge me with violating my service agreement. (Am I?)

I've had Grand Central from the beginning and it rocks. I use it to protect my real numbers. I like the availability of the voice mail (over the phone, from the site, in my Gmail account) and I like the ability to preview and record incoming calls. I'd love to see it take the next steps: address book sync, texting both ways, the ability to record outbound calls, and complete integration with the rest of the Google Suite.

There is one small annoyance though, texting. It won't allow you to send texts to your grand central number and have it forwarded to your mobile phone. That would be nice if it was able to do that.

@Khamel: Some people are really to slow (or self-involved?) to listen and follow a simple voice command - I get so many half messages that are completely indecipherable.
Also, the number I was assigned once belonged to someone with a delinquent something account, so I get harassed all the time from some collections agency in Michigan. Despite my repeated pleas that they leave me alone, I can't get them to stop calling me every week. Not really GC's fault, but it kind of cancels out the benefit of the service; I wanted to use GC for call forwarding, but I hate hate hate getting the unwanted calls forwarded to my work, home, and cell numbers. And of course they switch numbers to prevent me from blocking them!!

I too have run into the case where people try to leave a message instead of stating their name...but 99% of the time it's annoying telemarketers anyway, so I don't care.
My wife has complained a few times that she hasn't been able to get through on my GC number, but as far as I can tell it's worked very well for me.
The only thing I wish I could set up was to have it not ring my work number outside of working hours; they've got the opposite feature available for home numbers, but it's annoying to have to shut down the forwarding to my work phone when I leave for the day (otherwise I see a bunch of "missed calls" on my work desk phone when I come in the next morning).

If/when they go to pay-for-outgoing connect-through, if it's more expensive than skype, I wonder how hard it would be to proxy through skype (or similar service) when you call your GrandCentral number? I was thinking of doing that anyway, before even knowing about GrandCentral. Since I have a fair number of friends who use their computer w/ headset as a primary phone, that'd give me free calling to their landlines if I set my skype number as a fave, and cheap calling to others if I start running close to my plan's minute limit.

One issue... I passed my GC # out to everyone saying its the only number they'd need for me and it worked fine till I started texting people. Everyone had erased my cell number and didn't know who I was when I would text them. They ended up having to add my old number.
Only other complaint is my cell phone collects 1 and 2 second voicemails from GC consisting of the last seconds of their automated voice. Oh well.
Otherwise, i love it. Great on vacation, great when working freelance in different offices at different times and great to give to strangers!
Can't wait to see what they do next with it!

My use for GC is that of a soft phone. Once your contacts have been imported, it's simple to search for a particular person, and press the call button. GC dials the number for you and connects to your desired phone. Instead of having to remember phone numbers, I used GC. I've even incorporated the search in Quicksilver to make the process even simpler and faster.
Right now, the process of importing is manual; In the future, just like with Gmail, I hope for some mechanism to sync with a service such as Plaxo.

GrandCentral (GC) has been an answer to my households many needs. We recently got a new home phone number (after moving) and decided to jump in on the GrandCentral approach and I have to say it is awesome having a telemarketer call you on GC. I have yet to get a telemarketer on my regular home number (I only register my GC number at the various places (when required)and not my real number) Also, GC tech support stated that a GoogleTalk integration will be coming soon. Man, that is going to be awesome when that happens. I have not had really any luck getting Gizmo to work right.

I have been using GC for about 6 months now and I really like the service, although there are definitely aspects that could be better.
First of all it is actually a great money saver if you have a T-mobile My Favs plan. My GC number is one of my 5 favs and all my calls are free and unlimited. Also if I want to call someone from my GC number, I can use the website to call my phone and the other person's phone. Using that feature I can get free outgoing calls as well. (Supposedly this outbound calling feature will not be free forever).
To fully utilize GrandCentral however you definitely need good internet access on your phone because you cannot access anything except new messages (and a few basic options) when you call in. If you don't have internet on your phone (or just bad coverage), or access to a computer, you are very limited to what you can do because you cannot access any old voice mails or your contacts.
Overall, I really like the service and they have been gradually improving it since it's launch, so I definitely recommend it.

GC is a great tool for the resume phone number. The rules allow me to avoid taking a recruiter's call in front of my boss. The ability to play messages on-line allows me to subtly determine if it's worth walking downstairs to call the recruiter back. All this and my wife doesn't have to wade through the messages the way she would with Vonage.

I love Grand Central. It is an awesome service and is nice if you don't have voicemail or an answering machine at home like me since Grand Central provides a free voicemail box. The additional feature of a voice telling you who is calling before you completely answer is nice, so you can avoid that call from your crazy ex and send the call straight to voicemail. It's definitely helpful if you've got three or four different phone numbers, so you can just give people one number to call.

I've been using Grand Central for a couple of months now. Overall, I like it and have made it a point to give out my GC number when asked for my number. Drawbacks are:
1. There's no iPhone integration (it's painful, at best, using an iPhone with GC)
2. You can't associate a cell number with more than one GC account (imagine living with someone, you have one GC number that you would like to have ring on your home # and both cell #s)
3. You can't associate a land line with more than 2 GC accounts. Frustrating for families!
4. Again, no iPhone integration - it's a sore spot.

Question for y'all:
How does GC affect free in-network mobile-to-mobile calling that nearly every carrier offers? If I receive a call from any fellow Verizon customer I am not charged any minutes. But what if that same Verizon customer calls me through GC and I pick up on my Verizon phone? Does it count as an in-network call or does it not count as in-network because I'm actually connected to GC and not directly to that other Verizon customer?
That's the big issue I would have with this service is whether I'd get screwed out of all the free in-network calls I get now. Any insight into this would be appreciated. Thanks.

@bradnh: Agreed. I'm near VT, but I'd much rather have a NH number. I scoured the grandcentral google group, and the nearest I found was that they have to wait for more numbers being available. I think it most likely has to do with that we (as well as Maine) have one area code and a lot more people than other one-area-code states, and therefore fewer freed up phone numbers. Just a thought. Once it rolls out for NH, I'm there.

Getting a Pittsburgh number is great to appear more local, and it works with the front door of my building, so I can buzz people in (you need a Pittsburgh number for this functionality, very annoying).
My one issue with GC is the screening. I realize it is a great feature for a lot of people, but just not one that I need. I was able to turn screening off so callers don't have to identify themselves, but is there a way to eliminate the "press 1 to accept" part and just answer it like a regular call?

As I have used GC since way before they were absorbed by Google, I obviously like the service a lot, but it is not without some minor faults.
Some calls fail. I have no way to know how many, but I will occasionally get a report from someone that my phone was never answered. Whether this failure rate is higher than the regular phone company is debatable.
They have experienced a couple of small outages and one big crash in all that time. Restoring everything from the crash seems to have taken a very long time, but it is commendable that they are doing so.
Call quality is definitely not as good as my land line, but generally better than a mobile.
Improvements I would like:
It would be great if they could merge their address book with my gmail address book.
The ability to dial from my computer's address book, rather than having to go to their web page.
Messages embodied in my email alerts (again instead of having to go to their web page). And, in a format other than flash.
Support my iPhone!!!
I'll continue to use it while free. If they start to charge, they need to add iPhone support for me to stay.

I'm still so-so on GC. I love the concept but my main complaint and the main reason I haven't switched my primary phone number is that when I get an incoming call and let the phone ring a few times the automated recording is already half over. Its like the recording starts when GC starts ringing my home phone. I usually get to the phone about the time it says "... and press 2 for this option...". Once they fix that I'm in.

The result: often on cell phones (where there can be a delay before the phone starts ringing), the call will go to voice mail before one can answer it. Grand Central needs to make the number of rings before pickup an customer selectable option.

I've been using Grand Central since you talked about it, and I've loved it! It's perfect for me because I started a computer consulting and technical support business recently and it gives me an option to have a seporate "work number" that my clients can reach me at. Plus, I can screen calls and record calls too, which is really helpful when I am either busy or need to remember what my client needs help with. I'm planning to switch cell phone numbers soon, too, so now I don't have to pass out a new number.

I signed up about a year ago, just to get my foot in the door. When they add Canada, I'll invite my other email account.
For the time being, I settled for a Buffalo, NY number, being the closest US city to here.

@salviati -- I'm moving to the UK in 5 months myself, and I already have a lot of family there. I find rebtel to be a good UK-US solution. Especially if you're doing mobile-to-mobile calls and do the little callback trick - it's free.

Gah...no numbers for the Phoenix area code, yet they have 'em for areas of Arizona that are in the sticks. Swell...

looks great, I would need a Canadian area code though to really take advantage.
Is there anywhere to sign up to be notified when Canadian area codes come online ?

STILL no numbers for Alaska. No smoked salmon filets for you, GrandCentral!
@Alaska Jack: Maybe we can send them a box of moose nuggets.

@bradnh: I think it has to do with local phone companies not wanting to or not being able to partner with GrandCentral because of costs/regulations. And I'm guessing if it's because of the regulations, it's more about the regulations leading to greater costs :) I actually work in Maine in the Telco industry - I should check with some of my peers that work more with the switch configuration and provisioning.. I too would love to have my GrandCentral number be a 207, or even 603 would be fine.

Not worth it, imho. The service has a "feature" that makes it hard to use if you have a cell phone: Call screening.
When you have an incoming call, it will tell you the name of the person calling when you answer the phone and then you have to press a button to accept or reject the call. The default action is to reject the call and have it go to voicemail. Not so bad so far, right? ok - what happens when you're driving your car and you're using a headset? What happens when you get a call and, because you have a Windows Smartphone that locks the screen, you can't push any buttons? If those situations don't bother you, bear in mind that you can't turn this 'feature' off.
Even worse than all that, this 'feature' is a silly duplicate of caller id's functionality. I've been posting about it in the helf forum for a bit now, but there's no response from the Google team on the issue!

After 'B' for Beta comes 'C' for commercial. I suspect the grandcentral voice will soon let your callers know about great offers from Ford and Verizon before connecting the call.

It's funny how many people have the same story that I'm about to tell. I originally got GC for my mom's sake. She didn't have a lot of money, didn't have a cell phone, didn't WANT a cellphone, and didn't understand the cellphone concept.
So I got my GC local number. Things worked for a while, but she kept forgetting that I had a local number now.
Finally, using one of my invites, I actually set up an account for her. Unexpected, this has been the most effective solution. Now she can make tons of free long distance calls. The only issue she's had has been accepting the fact that it REALLY WILL WORK when she clicks the call button, but she's gotten over that.
An in all, it's an INCREDIBLE service for all those moms of the world.

how much is this going to be in the long term? i mean... the beta is 'free' but you know Google will turn around and charge for this once all of us are knee deep in it :-)

Not being able to set outgoing caller ID to the GC # is the deal breaker for me. Most times people just don't recognize who's calling them because they've gotten rid of your old numbers. Worst case, it reveals your "real" number to those you'd rather hide it from.

GrandCentral has been very useful for me because I can forward all incoming calls to my Canadian phone number, while my family and friends still live in Texas. It's free for them, and free for me. The only catch is that you have to press "1" every time you receive a call through it.

I've used GrandCentral for about a year now. It worked great until there was an outage lasting almost a month where GC calls never rang my cell phone. They finally fixed that problem after a month. It was very frustrating because they didn't even acknowledge my requests for help.
Other problems : no texting using the GC number, no way to call out using your GC number to someone who is not already set up as a contact in GC.

The biggest problem I have with Grandcentral is convincing people to use my new number. Yes, my old number still works. No, I don't want you to call it anymore.
I went in and changed the stored number in my mother-in-law's cell phone, and she still calls the old number.
I have it set up with Vonage that after 30 sec with no answer it forwards to my GC number. So if you call my old number, it rings, slight pause, rings some more, then voicemail.
I still wish there was a number I could call, get connected, then dial the number I want to reach so their caller ID shows my GC number.
That and API's. GC really needs some API's and feeds. Not to mention merging my gmail and GC address books.

I'm using Grand Central simply as a GTD memo pad. When I'm out and about, I like to record memo's on my phone, to remind me later. The problem is that I forget to check my phones memo's! GC solves this problem, by sending me an email for every message that I leave.
Also, as someone stated before, it's a great number to use for Resumes, or any other person you would rather "call back".
