Add Keyword Search to Safari with Keywurl
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:00 PM on February 26, 2008

Mac OS X only: Freeware Safari plug-in Keywurl brings the time-saving convenience of keyword searches to Safari, allowing users to type something like imdb Semi-Pro into the address bar to search IMDB rather than first going to the home page. Granted, this functionality comes built in to Firefox, and with a few tweaks to Firefox you can really supercharge your address bar with keyword bookmarks and searches, but for anyone who sticks with Safari for its raw speed and Mac-ness, Keywurl is a must-have. Keywurl is freeware, Mac OS X only.

If you like this feature, and I do, you should also check out Saft:

It's not free, but it does this and much more. It brings great ad blocking, auto tab saving, and more to Safari. It's a must have for me.

Awesome. Keyword Search is by far the most gangster feature on Firefox.
Then add QuickSilver with Search Plugin is like whoa!

Most excellent, this is the biggest thing that kept me from using Safari. Firefox was such a memory hog that I hated opening it, but if I wanted my keyword searches I had to (although the Firefox 3 Beta seems to have fixed a lot of the memory leakage, woohoo!)
Also, I would recommend that anyone who likes using Safari tries a Webkit nightly build ([www.webkit.org])-- it's astoundingly fast.

There are a number of plugins that do this, but keywurl works best with leopard. I found a bunch of other cool ones at pimpmysafari.com but genereally try to keep things lean.

I like Inquisitor, but still prefer the Firefox way of doing it. I wish I could arrange the search engine selection to the top of the Inquisitor panel - and there are some concerns about favoritism in the served up results part of the program - but it's a free program.
I hope Acid Search gets updated enough to work correctly with Safari 3.

ok...how do I get keywurl to do anything? I've got it installed, but I don't get how to use it. I want the same thing damen wants ^^. How do I set it up to do that? Or even just to preface a URL search with "g" to do a "Lucky" search?

On a similar note, does anyone know how to add "I'm feeling lucky" functionality to the address bar, without hitting a modifier key? I know Inquisitor can probably do it, but I'd like it based in the address bar.

Perhaps it's worthy to note that you can also use this to add a keyword without the search. Eg. type: "lh" to go to www.lifehacker.com
I'm away from my computer, but I think you just put in the keyword and a url, and don't worry about the @@@ or $$$.

@twins8791: Just set the "default" keyword to "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&btnI=I'm Feeling Lucky&q=$$$".
The next version of Keywurl will let you right-click on any search field (such as Google's) and select Create Keyword Search, and it'll save a new keyword from the search form, including any additional options such as check boxes.
Incidentally, Tiger support was broken in the latest version. A bug-fix release is out now which remedies this error.

Hey! Thanks shipahoy, I've just upgraded to the new version to do this "default" thing.
@twins: To get it to do a keyword search, type in a sample search on the site you want it to perform a search on (use any text). When you get the results page, copy the url and paste it into the keywurl preference pane, replacing the sample text with @@@. Then associate it with a keyword!
Not too hard, but the next version sounds much easier!
