Set Your Google Talk Status as Idle When You're Too Busy
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on February 23, 2008
Windows only: Google Talk is, as weblog Digital Inspiration puts it, an extremely honest application, inasmuch as it will only display your status as idle when you truly are idle. But if you aren't keen on your IM buddies being aware of what you're doing, Google Talk's fidelity to the truth can be irritating. Freeware application gAlwaysIdle allows you to set your idle status on Google Talk, either to always idle or never idle. If you don't want to sign out of IM but you want to discourage random IMs, gAlwaysIdle may be a good solution. gAlwaysIdle (which we've mentioned once before in passing) is freeware, Windows only.

I've been doing something like this since I started using ICQ in the mid-1990s. If I leave myself "online" all the time, I simply will never be able to get anything done! When always on away, it's like being able to filter phone calls; I can filter out the "friendly chats" from the "important calls".

anything like this for mac? specifically, as a plugin for Adium? i'm constantly having people ask me if i'm back while i'm trying to do work (but using Google chat to communicate with my coworkers) . .

I've been using this for a while, and I must say it's definitely nice! Just remember to switch it back to "normal" when you then want to message someone from whom you'd rather keep the fact that you're using such a hack.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the Away status. For some reason people still do message you when your status is "Busy"... and you won't be able to safely ignore them without them knowing that you've done just so! The Away status gives you a bit more wriggle room to ignore unimportant messages when they come in. For those who use it, if they don't already know: Miranda IM sets your Google Talk status to "Idle" automatically when you set "Jabber Away" on your Gtalk account. Quite handy and a big advantage Miranda has for me over Pidgin, which always stubbornly insisted on making me "Online" when I set my Jabber to Away!

I'd like this for AIM and YIM! I know Trillian, Digsby, and Miranda don't support this this out of the box, but what about a hack or plugin?

@Surtur: Google just released "invisible" status for the Google Talk Gadget built into Gmail.

Why doesn't google have more options for status? Weird.

@Surtur: Yeah, google seems uncharacteristically slow on this one. What the hell are they paying their nerdlingers for?

Or you can just set it to busy. Why install another program?
