Add Full Web Pages to iGoogle
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:30 AM on February 20, 2008

The Google Operating System points out an overlooked but seriously worthy iGoogle gadget that can display entire up-to-date web pages inside a tab on Google's start page service. You might have seen this trick deep inside our Show Us Your iGoogle gallery, but it deserves its own spotlight here. You'll want to create a new tab for each web page you want to embed, and make sure that tab is selected before clicking the "Add to Google" link on creator Michael Bolin's page. Best of all, dynamic web apps seem to work fine inside the tabs, giving you access to Gmail, Google Reader, Remember the Milk, or any other of your favourites, right from your point of browser entry. Got your own embedded page timesavers on your start page, Google or otherwise? Share your sites in the comments.

@mikeatlifehacker: There is a widget which shows any new messages in your gmail box

It worked -- but took over everything else in my google page. Does anyone know of a Google Gadget to simply grab some text from a website and display it on my iGoogle page?

@mikeatlifehacker: Yes, it does. I'm using it right now. Go to add content and look under the communication tab. Shows your new emails and a link to them. Pretty handy, but I still like the Gmail Notifer better.

But, would it be possible to embed igoogle into igoogle, with that tab open? And would it make a funky fractal sort of thing, or would it just kill your computer for crimes against reality? :P

If there were a way to check and send my mail from within Netvibes I'd use it. Does Netvibes have a widget that allows you to see your gmail window from within your Netvibes page?

Why would I want a website in a website, when I could press Ctrl-T?

Hm....Netvibes is still better! :D

@edythemighty: It is, but slow on refreshing feeds. A lot of times I'll refresh the lifehacker one and still have old news, but the site is already 2 or 3 into the new ones.

I don't understand why this is cool - just use Netvibes for subscriptions and separate Firefox tabs for complete pages. (I keep Gmail permanently open in its own tab and use Gmail notifier to alert me when I have new mail.)

I added www.gmail.com using this interface, and for some reason, the second iGoogle opens, GMail breaks out of the frame, takes over iGoogle and loads. However, it's the default display on iGoogle, so I can't switch away before GMail breaks it upon loading. Any advice / help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@Sean Killeen:
"You can add GMail in Basic HTML mode. Go into your GMail, and at the bottom, click the link for Basic HTML. Copy that URL and use it in Your Page Here.
Granted, this isn't as nice as the standard Gmail, but it works nonetheless."

I have not tried this myself but saw the comment.

DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!
Ok. This was really cool at first. I added my Google calendar to my tab and ...poof... there it was. Then I add my Google email to a tab and ... poof... it was there but google email immediately breaks out of the tab and takes over the whole browser window. I've looked but I can't find anyway of removing that tab without loading that tabs contents up. So now I have a worthless tab that I can't ever click into and it was a total pain to get to a different tab before email breaks out of the tab it's in.
HELP!!!

I've found this gadget useful to display pages that have no gadget equivalent. It is buggy, though. For example, you can't link to a page anchor without getting layout weirdness all over your main iGoogle page.

OK this has ruined my afternoon. Now when i open mozila i cant get to my igoogle, gmail takes over the full frame, despite my attempts to click to another tab it always proceeds to gmail. Now i cant get to my start page.
How are you people fixing this? I see others have had the issue.

dont keep your gmail open all the time, use a notifier [gmailnotifier.net]

@gbkrause: Just hit the stop button as it loads so that you have long enough to either change the address or delete the tab.

I found that using this thing screws up the the igoogle themes.
My fox is living in another time zone now. :(

@Sean Killeen (et al): i had this problem, too. it's kinda tricky to remove, but you have to somehow get your mouse cursor above the X button (the one for removing the app), then when gmail loads itself, ALT+Left (once or twice, depending on what URL you put in the app) and really quickly click the X. it takes a few tries, and gmail will still load after you hit the X, but close that (browser) tab and when you go to the page again, the app should be gone.

Since I don't even use the tabs, and have a tabbed browser, I just don't get the appeal of this. Oh, I get the appeal of "anything you want in iGoogle", but I prefer to use the Iframe gadget ( [www.google.com] ) + a page optimized for mobile browsing (like Google Calendar Mobile - [www.google.com] , or Facebook - [iphone.facebook.com] ).

I hardly touch my iGoogle page because its always slow to load (even with very little on it), and then it seems to make my firefox hog lots of memory and cpu whenever its just sitting there.

@gbkrause: As a last resort, you could try iGoogle Reset.
Keep in mind, though, it'll completely reset your iGoogle, and you'll lose any widgets or settings you've set up. But if nothing else works...
