In less than a week we have monster iron hardware coming in to handle bursts of user growth.

We just got on TechCrunch less than 3 days ago and have been handling that load OKAY, but LifeHacker is much much worse :-).

We are "fully" unicode compliant, so it should do Cyrillic just fine. We haven't had a lot of testing of foriegn languages, but it seems to be working well. We would appreciate feedback if you find you can't search your unicode based music meta-data. (Use the feedback tab on the site).

for whatever reason i havent been coming onto lifehcker...despite the fact that i go on gizmodo all the time. kinda contradictory...but now that i have looked over the website all i can say is...lifehacker ftw

anyway back on topic. i would love to do server stuff on my computers at home...stream my music, have a web page...i would just love to do all of that cool stuff! only problem is, i fear that i would be opening myself up for hackers to mess up/take control of my computers (and in the process really mess me up).

so what i'm getting at is...does anyone have any advice for securing (home) servers?

Yet another 'placeshifting' solution to a problem that, for me at least, simply does not exist. Kind of like SlingBox. I must be so living in the 80's to not recognize & appreciate the utility of these things.

@jrghoull: Your dsl/cable modem should already be natted. As long as you don't open up ports or forward them out of your home network, you should be fine.

@jrghoull: Lots of ways you could do it, but one of the most basic methods is to have a server that sets between your router and your dsl modem. DMZ that box and don't leave anything important on it (dont use it for browsing or any personal information). Run your webservers and stuff out of that, then let the router do your firewalling. lots of how-tos on that sort of thing. Oh and on that one, probably better to load linux of some flavor due to it's method of sandboxing at the os level. you could use bsd/osx too, but linux is cheaper. lots of good distros for that, and many play nicely with windows and mac's.

Oh and for all you windows users; orb is now included in winamp. no setting up an account on the orb website anymore; it just uses your media library settings from winamp.

it seems so complicated that i'd almost definately fudge something up and lose the internet (and have to call my computer expert guy up to come out and fix it for me) but now that i know of it i can keep searching around and reading about it until i know about all the different parts of the whole process/configuration at which point i might give it a shot

I tried this with my cell phone (running WinMoPro 6). Unfortunately, it was a no-go. When I first went to the site, it said it needed Adobe Flash. After I downloaded and installed Flash, all I got was a white screen.

I was hoping this would end my search for mobile music access. Back to the drawing board...

Can anyone say honeypot? Am I the only person who remembers the MediaDefender near-success of miivi? I demand some source code and developer credentials. Also suspect is lack of centralized server support. Someone braver than will have to tell me whether my paranoia is justified or not.

If u want to use this service, you need to have real IP or access to router to configure port forwarding. I haven't both :-(

To your "honeypot" comment. JukeFly only syncs meta-data from your music, specifically, artist, album, genre, track and title. It has no idea where you got anything from, nor does it allow P2P copying of music.

It doesn't ever upload the music to our server (although we may allow that in the future for caching and friends playlist).

Maybe that hardware change is going on now? I can't log in and the blog page isn't up either (Error establishing a database connection).

As for my impressions, I like it a lot. The interface is cleaner than orb. I like how the graphic EQ actually works. The server application seems to be a lot less CPU-intensive than Orb or others. I just added my first friend on it, but I couldn't play his music.

@GBMEDUSA: For mobile streaming, orb worked fairly well on my Windows Mobile 5 treo (it would use Windows Media Player to stream).
