Ten Must-Have Plug-ins to Power Up Pidgin
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on February 15, 2008

Cross-platform, multi-protocol instant messaging application Pidgin is very functional, but by default it's not what most people would call sexy. But like many great software projects, from Firefox to foobar2000, the looks and extra functionality are there—you just have to know where to find them. Today we're taking a look at 10 of the best Pidgin plug-ins for taking Pidgin from drab to fab.
NOTE: Unless linked elsewhere, the plug-ins listed are included with the default installation of Pidgin—it's just a matter of turning them on in Tools -> Plugins and, in some cases, configuring them.

Stay Smart Over IM with Text Replacement
It's easy to get sloppy on the grammar when you're chatting, but the Text Replacement plug-in's autocorrection macros seamlessly correct common typos on-the-fly. If you've got a particular grammar offense that's not included in Text Replacement by default, you can add your own corrections to the list. Wish you had this functionality in every program? Check out Texter (Windows), TextExpander (Mac), or Snippits (Linux). Encrypt Chat Sessions with Pidgin-Encrypt
Keep your IM sessions secure without hassle with the Pidgin-Encrypt plug-in. Back when Pidgin was still called GAIM, we showed you how easy it is to set up a secure chat session with this extension. To use Pidgin-Encrypt, download the installer from the Pidgin-Encrypt homepage, enable it in Tools -> Plugins, and then start a secure chat by clicking the padlock icon. Start BitTorrent Downloads through Pidgin with Autoaccept
The Autoaccept plug-in allows you to set rules for automatically accepting file transfers from specific users. As I pointed out in the top 10 BitTorrent tools and tricks, this feature can, among other things, be especially handy for remotely startup up BitTorrent downloads. Keep Notified of Chats with Guifications
The Guifications plugin notifies you of user status and incoming messages with a small pop-up window in the corner of your screen, similar to how Growl works with Adium on the Mac. You can customise the look, location, and what events will trigger a Guification alert so you're only distracted by a Guification pop-up when you really want to be. Get SMS Alerts of IMs While You're Away
If instant messaging is an extremely important part of what you do, the gSMS plug-in can keep you abreast of IMs even when you're away from your computer by sending an SMS message to your phone through Google Calendar, of all places. You'll need to download gSMS from the link above to add this plug-in to Pidgin.Remember Where You Left Off with Enhanced History
Pidgin comes with a built-in History plug-in that automatically inserts your last conversation with the current contact in your new conversation—especially handy if you're rejoining a conversation and want to pick up where you left off (after restarting your computer, for example). If that's enough for your needs, just flip the switch on it and you're set with the default plug-in. If you want more functionality, like the ability to display anywhere from zero to 255 previous conversations or limit chat histories by how long ago they occurred, the non-default Enhanced History plug-in is for you. Save Your Chat Sessions with SessionSave
This plug-in remembers the state of your Pidgin chat windows when you quit and re-opens your conversation windows just as you left them—sort of like the session saving function built into the Tab Mix Plus Firefox extension. Coupled with one of the History plug-ins above, you won't miss a beat if you have to quickly quit Pidgin or restart your computer.Add Now Playing Status to Pidgin
If you're terrible at setting your status or remembering to change it, let the MusicTracker plug-in updates your status for you. The plug-in sets your status to whatever music you're listening to, works with tonnes of digital music players from iTunes and Winamp on Windows to Amarok and XMMS on Linux, and exactly what it displays is very customisable. Get Updates on New Releases with Release Notification
If you're a Pidgin die-hard, you'll definitely want to enable the Release Notification plug-in, which periodically checks for updates to Pidgin and alerts you whenever one is available.Theme Pidgin with the GTK Theme Selector or GTK+ Theme Control
Pidgin runs on both Windows and Linux using the GTK graphical environment, so theming Pidgin is as easy as using GTK's built-in theming tools. Here's how it works on Windows. First, you probably want to find a good looking theme. A good place to start is at the Gnome Application Themes, where you can browse tons of GTK themes (like this one I'm using).
Found one? Download it and extract the contents to C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\share\themes (there should already be a few themes in there to give you an idea of what the results should look like). Now you just need to fire up the Gnome Theme Selector (it should be in your Start menu) and pick the theme you just installed.
Alternately, you could install the Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control plug-in, which allows you to adjust Pidgin's look directly from Pidgin.
Got a favorite Pidgin plug-in that I left out here? Let's hear about it, and other tricks that make Pidgin your chat app of choice, in the comments.

One thing I have been trying to figure out for a while is how to keep one account's status static while the others change with the global status. Ie. If I have 4 accounts, I want one account to always say "I am away right now", while the others change to whatever status I set globally at the bottom of the main buddy list window. Last I checked, the "use a different status for some accounts" option in "new status", didn't work for this. Is there any way to make one account ignore the global status *always*?

one more option to encrypt:
my friends (windows) use simpLite and I (linux) use simpServer and route my pidgin to simpserver. Its working for years like that! I know its not a pidgin plugin, in fact works with any msn client on my linux, but its a tip :)

I use pidgin too and love it. I use the guifications plugin so that I can see the popups from the tray. It works great but I hated everybody's themes for it so I created my own.

The only problem of pidgin in Windows is the lack of proper notifications (in linux the libnotify plugin does job) because Guifications is quite limited, it doesn't even show the full text of a received message. I've been using Pidgin for a long time, either in XP and Ubuntu, and Guifications seems to have a "new version in development" for months.

@InspectorxGadget: I think the MusicTracker bug occurs if you have Unicode characters in your track titles - it crashes Pidgin and then it can't read the config file when it restarts. If you go into your App Data\.purple folder and edit accounts.xml, removing the offending characters, it'll restart correctly. But yes, very annoying!
And @Shmoo: you can toggle the buddy list using a hotkey in Pidgin - you don't have to use AutoHotKey. There's a 'Hotkeys' plugin. It doesn't have much functionality and it doesn't let you use Win+X combinations, but it is there.

@jglessner: Still, I would prefer to not only change the colors of Pidgin but the entire sking.. especially the conversation windows are like.. well I always used Trillian @ Windows and therefore am used to a pretty simple interface, with smilies that don't bomb the layout because of their size (I know there are different smiley-sets for Pidgin, but I couldn't find any that would satisfy me so far).. well I simply expected an open source app to be more customizable :( even Digsby lets you change the look of your IM windows, however there is no layout that satisfies me so far either :p

I have to agree with the other commenters. OTR (Off-The-Record) is one of my most valued plugins. The great thing is, that it allows you to use encryption with almost all of your contacts. Adium has OTR installed and enabled by default, Miranda has a Plugin for it as well.

JGlessner, thanks for the info. Could you describe how I'd do this in WindowsXP? I'm sorry for going off-topic.
Let's say that I send a photo via Pidgin to a friend who is on the Yahoo IM network. This initiates a direct connection....then?
bookishboy
jglessner
Posted 4:29 PM 16/2/08
@bookishboy: The only way to get this information is through initiating a direct connection with the other user. For the most part this means file transfer, and then you can do it from the OS, not from an IM client.
This can work (or not) depending on NAT/Firewall/Proxy issues.

@Lawk Salih: Meebo is great for quick conversations. But it is chalked full of javascript that tends to slow some processes down. It also must be used within an Internet browser of some sort (more memory). With Pidgin, I have more control over the application and how it displays and stores my information.
Meebo works wonderfully on public computers!!!

Is there some way, either with a plugin or Pidgin's default interface, to determine the IP address of a person you're chatting with? If so, would this feature be only available on particular networks (like, possible on ICQ but not on MSM?)
I use Pidgin on ICQ, GTalk, MSM, AIM and YIM and am curious if this can be accomplished across them.

@Sloth: Sure there is (if you're on a windows machine), install the portable version of Pidgin from www.portableapps.com, that way the changes you make to GTK themes are 'local' for that application.
If you have the installed version, then yes GTK theme changes are either global (all apps, all users), or global on a per user basis (all GTK apps).
I really prefer to use portable apps where I can, as I work on several different computers throughout the day (I'm a SysAdmin).
@Fishlips20:
To change the theme in GTK you use the GTK Theme Selector (gtkthemeselector.exe) which is located in the GTK directory (\\..\GTK\bin\gtkthemeselector.exe).
Once you have your theme selected, use the conversation preferences in Pidgin to tune your font settings:
In Pidgin select Tools>Preferences>Conversations Tab
In this tab, ensure that the 'Use Font from theme' checkbox is unselected, and then select your font and the font size.
Hope that gets you where you need to be.

Is there some plugin that will remember & restore the location of each chat window after the chat was closed (not the program, just that buddie's chat window)?
My problem with the latest versions is that when I'm chatting with someone and another person IMs me, their window pops up and I inadvertently type to them what was meant for the first person. When windows appear on top each other it can make for embarrassing IMs sent the wrong people!!
BTW, tabbed windows aren't an option - I don't do tabs as they drive me insane!! Alt+Tab 4 Life!

This isn't so much a plugin tip, but I like to keep the Pidgin buddy list out of the way except when I need it to start an IM. So, I've automated showing / hiding the buddy list to Win+B using the following AutoHotkey script. Note, It calls the pidgin executable because Autohotkey seems to sometimes struggle with system tray stuff.

IfWinActive Buddy List

WinClose Buddy List
} else {

Pidgin is working fine for me, except for two annoyances:
1. The buddy list takes too much space, for instance PSI is better because the font and the vertical line spacing are smaller. With Pidging you spend your time scrolling up and down....
2. Haven't found a way to display notification pop-ups when s/o comes on/off-line.
Anyone has fixes for that?
