Make Your Extensions Work with the Firefox 3 Beta
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:32 AM on February 14, 2008

Firefox 3 Beta only: If you've taken the plunge into testing the brand new Firefox 3 beta but your favourite extensions are disabled, that's because developers haven't updated them and may not be providing secure updates yet. If you're an impatient risk-taker who needs your extensions back NOW, here's a cheat that may get them to work. Big Honking Warning: Only do this if you're willing to deal with possible bleeding edge extension bugs and security risks!
- Type
about:configinto Firefox's address bar and click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button. - Right-click anywhere. Choose New>Boolean. Make the name of your new config value
extensions.checkCompatibilityand set it tofalse. - Make another new boolean pair called
extensions.checkUpdateSecurityand set the value tofalse. - Restart Firefox.

you could also just use the extension, nightly tester tools...

This doesn't seem to work for me. After setting these two values, the compatibility check is still being made (and failing) while installing addons.
However figured out another way to make FF2 addons to work in FF3 beta:

Hope this helps someone.

I wrote a blog post on you to make incompatible extensions work with Firefox 3. It can be found here:

Hope that helps someone. It seems popular.

FEBE / CLEO extensions work great to backup and restore all extensions easily from v2 -> v3b

If I could get Tab Mix Plus to work I'd be happy.

Alternatively, if you try to install an add-on and it doesn't work, right-click and save it to desktop. Then open it in any program you use to manage archive files (I use WinRar), open the "install.rdf" file, and edit the 2.0.0.* line to reflect your version of Firefox (or higher). Save the file back to the archive, open Firefox and drag-and-drop the archive onto a Firefox window.
Of course you have to do this for every extension and I don't know how to use it with the ones you already have installed...

@scott johnson: I think the goal is to have a month or so before the release to get the most popular extensions up to date and compatible. That's what RC versions are for, after all.

@Gina Trapani: It seems as though I need to send some emails to the Mozilla Add-Ons people. There should be some process in place for them to have the updated extensions on hand so that we don't have to wait a week after a release for an "officially compatible" extension. In the mean time, the tips in this article are superb. It's nice to know that I won't have to unzip and manually edit extensions like I had to do when FF2.0 came out.

Yeah, Nightly Tester Tools 1.3b4 seems to work fine. I've only tested it with Better Gmail 2 and FilterSet G Updater so far though.

@scott johnson: A couple reasons. First, Mozilla Add-ons (the only place at my disposal right now that will provide secure updates) wouldn't accept extensions compatible for anything later than 3.0b2 until today, and today I've been kinda busy writing. :) It also takes some time for Moz Add-ons to approve updates, so even if I uploaded it this moment it wouldn't necessarily get approved right away.
Rest assured, it's on my list to do soon, but honestly issuing an update every time there's a minor release is a big PITA! The extensions will be 3.0-compatible once 3.0 is officially released for sure.

Gina:
Why not just go ahead an issue an update now to Better Gmail and friends so that it's already compatible with version up to 3.0.x.x when 3.0-final is out?

I still can't get any kind of session saver to work, whether it's thru Firefox itself or Tab Mix Plus.

MRJR,
You can achieve Stop-or-Reload with Stylish addon + [userstyles.org]

BugMeNot21 is a collective. You have been assimilated. ;)
Just to add, all 27 of my extensions have worked in FF3b3 with compatibility / checking switched off - except del.icio.us (apparently they're still working on FF3 compatibility) and Roboform. YMMV.

I tried it last night. IIRC, it worked for Adblock, Errorzilla, Linkification, Long Titles, QuickJava, and Stealther, but left out, Stop-or-Reload button, the balloon feature of Answers, FxIF, and BBCode.
FF's typeahead feature was broken for me; that and no BBcode doomed it for me - I went back to v2.

3 crashed on opening right after I tried the hack, so it's back to 2 for me (at least until more than two of my extensions are supported).
If I had more time and energy I might try to work with it, but for now I;m content to wait as I need those extensions more than I need the upgrade.

Can't believe I missed this before! It's great! FINALLY able to switch back from Safari. I mean, Safari's great but man, I need my Foxy plugins! The only plugin that won't work is Smart Bookmarks Bar to tidy everything up...small price to pay for now...

I just used this on FF3 Beta 4, and worked like a charm. I had to do it twice, since my FoxMarks had an update.

Not working on FF3 Beta 4 on my Intel iMac. It shows that compatibility checking is disabled, but the extensions still aren't functioning. Nightly Tester tools didn't do the trick either, even after clicking "Make all compatible." This just results in a crash on launch. Bummer.
